The brushless dc motors are widely used in the servo motor application because of their different advantages over conventional DC motors. However high performance motor drives require fast and accurate speed response of the system, quick recovery of speed from any disturbance and sensitivity to motor parameter variation. To operate the motor with proper reference speed different controllers are widely used in industrial application. In this present work, genetic algorithm based PID controller is used to tune the PID controller parameters for speed control of BLDC motor. Ziegler-Nicholas tuning formula is used for tuning and gain predication of GA-PI and GA-PID controller. Genetic algorithm is a robust optimization technique based on natural selection. The basic goal of GA to optimize the fitness function. In the present work we use integral square error (ISE) based fitness function to optimize the gain co-efficient of PID controller by considering the different parameters such as rise time settling time and overshoot of the response. Simulation results obtained from different conventional controllers as well fuzzy-PID controller are compared with the GA-PI and GA-PID controllers.

Speed control of brushless DC motor using intelligent controllers

The paper describes the process of creating of BLDC's digital control system. The BLDC has no speed sensor, so back-EMF method is used for commutation control. Authors show how to model the control system in MatLab/Simulink and to test it onboard STM32F4 microcontroller.

Designing of sensoreless control system for brushless direct current motor

This paper proposes a sensorless speed control technique for Brushless DC Motor (BLDC) drives by estimating speed from the hall sensor signals. Conventionally, the speed is measured using precision speed encoders. Since these encoders cost almost half of the entire drive system, there arises the need for a low cost speed estimation technique. This is proposed by measuring the frequency of the in-built-hall sensor signals. Here, a closed loop speed control of BLDC motor is proposed using a current controlled pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. Since BLDC motor is an electronically commutated machine, the commutation period is determined by a switching table that shows the hall signals' status. The entire system was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and the performance of the system was analyzed for different speed and torque references.

The speed control of the Permanent Magnet Brush Less Direct Current (PMBLDC) Motor is of high importance since it indirectly controls the mechanical output required and hence the efficiency. The control on this parameter has been demonstrated in various papers using various controllers like PWM, PI, Fuzzy and Neural Networks (NN) etc. In this paper an attempt has been made to analyze the result of PI Controller, by using the appropriate K p and K i value in order to get the constant control on the speed of a Brush Less Direct Current (BLDC) motor. Further an attempt as an assessment has been made in designing an alternative controller to minimize steady state error and obtain better result for the control of the speed parameter of a BLDC Motor. A Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) has been designed to compare the PI Controller output with the FL Coutput. The results are then compared and analyzed. It is thereby concluded that the FLC offers better adaptability than the normal linear PI controller and that the PMBLDC drive offers better steady-state and dynamic performances.

Speed control of a BLDC Motor using Fuzzy Logic Controller

The paper proposes a model of brushless DC motor considering behavior of the motor during commutation. The torque characteristic of BLDC motor presents a very important factor in design of the BLDC motor drive system, so it is necessary to predict the precise value of torque, which is determined by the waveforms of back-EMF. After development of simple mathematical model of the BLDC motor with sinusoidal and trapezoidal waveforms of back-EMF the motor is simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Based on analysis of the time responses a comparison study of results of both BLDC motor types is presented in Graphical User Interface of MATLAB environment.
