approved: The purpose of this study was to identify the problems experienced by international students enrolled in an English language program and to investigate if significant differences existed between subgroups based on the variables of age, gender, geographical region, length of stay in the United States, place of residence, major source of financial support, level of English proficiency, degree of satisfaction and primary goal. The subjects consisted of international students enrolled in the Oregon State University English Language Institute (ELI). There were 108 students in t1-1 study; 76 returned usable responses. The Michigan International Student Problem Inventory (MISPI) developed by John Porter in 1913 and revised in 1977 Was used in the study. The data woe analyzed by the application of mean, standard deviation, and Chi-square. Of all the problem areas considere(j in the study English Redacted for Privacy language was the problem of most concern to the respondents. This was followed by Living-Dining, Admission-Selection, Social-Personal, Health Services, Academic Records, Placement Services, Financial Aid, Student Activities and Orientation Services. The item of Religious Services was of least concern to the students. The specific problems of most concern to the students were: limited English vocabulary, understanding American "slang", the weather, taste of food in United States, loneliness, homesickness, making friends, grades, writing or typing term papers, and getting admitted to colleges or universities in the United States. The respondents were least concerned with relationships with roommates, registration for classes, objective examinations, and religious practices in the United States. There were significant differences between older and younger students and among students from different geographical regions with respect to the problems they experienced. Older students reported fewer problems than their younger counterparts. Students from Africa reported the most difficulties followed by respondents from Middle East, Asia, Europe and Latin America. There were no significant differences in gender, length of stay in the United States, place of residence, source of financial support, level of English proficiency, degree of satisfaction, and primary goal. An analysis of relationship between interpersonal communication and mass media use by foreign students in the United States

approved: George Copa This study presented an in-depth exploration of international student perceptions of a coordinated studies program (CSP) at Seattle Central Community College. In conLiucting this research project, a phenomenological research methodology was used. Qualitati c data were collected through participant observations, focus group, document re ie. and individual in-depth interviews with nine students. The data were analyzed systematically and categorized into the following four themes: (1) program integration. (2) program content, (3) program structure, and (4) program faculty. Data within each theme were then grouped under subcategories and themes were presented with examples of student's statements to illustrate each theme. International students found that the coordinated studies program provided a unique and positive educational experience. Of great importance, students found Redacted for Privacy that the experience was beneficial in addressing both social and academic areas in their lives. For most of the international students in the study, the sense of supportiveness and relationship development opportunities were the most important features of the experience. International students were able to build relationships with both American students and other international students through prolonged cross-cultural interaction in and out of class. The international students valued the cross cultural learning and the introduction to American culture the CSP context provided. The interdisciplinary nature of the CSP was, in general, viewed positively, though, for many students it was a big stretch since these types of learning strategies may not have been experienced in the past.
