Online Live-Stream Broadcasting of the Holy Mass during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Poland as an Example of the Mediatisation of Religion: Empirical Studies in the Field of Mass Media Studies and Pastoral Theology

This paper concerns a problem, the global pandemic COVID-19, which has influenced religious practices with respect to health protection across the Muslim world. Rapid transmission of the virus between people has become a serious challenge and a threat to the health protection of many countries. The increase in the incidence of COVID-19 in the Muslim community took place during and after the pilgrimages to Iran's Qom and as a result of the Jamaat Tabligh movement meetings. However, restrictions on religious practices have become a platform for political discussions, especially among Muslim clergy. This paper is an analysis of the religious and political situation in Muslim countries, showing the use of Islam to achieve specific goals by the authorities, even at the price of the health and life of citizens.

When new critical editions of Ford’s work*discussed in this volume*are released in the near future, they are going to provide significant genetic criticism hitherto missing in the archive (though, after David Lodge, we need to be suspicious of the word ‘authoritative’). Yet, without an electronic archive built by using the Text Encoding Initiative, we will still be limited in tracing the semantic influences Ford had on other writers. The ‘networks’ (10) of cultural production alluded to by the editor in this volume are certainly there and are perhaps even more profound than we can imagine, but they are often obscured without proper electronic environments linking disparate archival texts across libraries and countries. Stannard notes, in his piece on editing The Good Soldier, that the archive includes ‘a MS in three hands with Ford’s corrections and including TS insertions which clearly replace parts (now lost) of the original MS; a TS of the whole novel with Ford’s corrections, the punctuation of which is radically different that of the published text; another, shorter Blast TS and the printed Blast text (which has its own variants); and the John Lane published text which alters substantive reading in the complete TS’ (230). No print volume can possibly (or profitably) contain all of these variants, but an electronic one can. This is the only way we are going to be able scientifically to find the datasets and patterns that bombs and fires took away from us. Ford Madox Ford, Modernist Magazines and Editing provides a solid introduction to the friendships and networks that shaped the early modernist period we are only now beginning to understand through our digital periodical archives. This book contains a significant contribution to scholarship, but an even greater one may rise from the next work in the International Ford Madox Ford Studies series, which I hope, will be an attempt to create a digital archive of extant Ford material to augment the physical one that is now lost to us*and an enhancement of Ford’s deserved reputation as key modernist producer.

The Dissemination of News and the Emergence of Contemporaneity in Early Modern Europe

The aim of this article is to analyze the empirical evidence collected in the form of in-depth interviews, observations, statistics and accounts concerning the assistance provided by female and male religious congregations in the fight against the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland during the first year after the outbreak (March 2020 to February 2021). The paper describes the nature of the assistance rendered by religious congregations to the sick, to those affected by the pandemic and to healthcare facilities during the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Poland. Our findings reveal that the activities undertaken and the support provided by religious congregations in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland have spanned many areas: medical assistance and nursing within the healthcare system, charitable work (including material, financial and welfare/housing aid), and pastoral, religious, educational, psychological, ecumenical, evangelization and missionary activities. The support provided by religious congregations as part of the coronavirus response efforts proved crucial and invaluable during the first weeks of the pandemic, that is in March and April 2020, when the healthcare system was faced with severe staff shortages.

The Church’s Attitude to the Means and Philosophy of Communication in the 9th and 16th Centuries: Courage and Trust Versus Escape and Censorship. This article is interdisciplinary. It concerns the research area of communication and media studies, theology and history. The authors analyze papal documents issued in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which concerned the distribution of the so-called avvisi handwritten ephemeral writings, commonly regarded as prototypes of modern press. The authors put forward the hypothesis that the criticism of avvisi at that time was mainly based on an immediate political need, while arguments of theological nature had less influence on this attitude. Nevertheless, such an attitude should be regarded as conservative and withdrawing. The authors juxtapose it with a diametrically different approach to the issue of communication, which the Church presented in relation to the mission of Cyril and Methodius. The courageous and trusting attitude of inculturation and treating the language of the Slavic peoples as an instrument of evangelization allowed for more effective missionary activities.
