Automated attendance management system based on face recognition algorithms

There has been a large amount of work on smart classrooms spanning over a wide range of research areas including information communication technology, machine learning, sensor networks, mobile computing, and hardware. Consequently, there have been several disparate reviews on various aspects of smart classrooms. Such piecemeal development is not sufficient for a pragmatic smart classroom solution. This article complements the literature by providing a consolidated review of interdisciplinary works under a common nomenclature and taxonomy. This multi-field review has exposed new research opportunities and challenges that need to be addressed for the synergistic integration of interdisciplinary works.

An android based course attendance system using face recognition

Classroom attendance check is a contributing factor to student participation and the final success in the courses. Taking attendance by calling out names or passing around an attendance sheet are both time-consuming, and especially the latter is open to easy fraud. As an alternative, RFID, wireless, fingerprint, and iris and face recognition-based methods have been tested and developed for this purpose. Although these methods have some pros, high system installation costs are the main disadvantage. The present paper aims to propose a face recognition-based mobile automatic classroom attendance management system needing no extra equipment. To this end, a filtering system based on Euclidean distances calculated by three face recognition techniques, namely Eigenfaces, Fisherfaces and Local Binary Pattern, has been developed for face recognition. The proposed system includes three different mobile applications for teachers, students, and parents to be installed on their smart phones to manage and perform the real-time attendance-taking process. The proposed system was tested among students at Ankara University, and the results obtained were very satisfactory.

Face Recognition-Based Mobile Automatic Classroom Attendance Management System

Student's attendance tracking is a vital issue in order to monitor students' performance in the classroom as well as in their studies. It becomes a key concern because the university authority maintains a rule that one student can only attend in the exam if his/her attendance is higher or equal to several percentages (60%,70% or 80% etc.) otherwise not. The traditional attendance system needs student's to physically sign the attendance sheet each time for the attendance of each class. This is unnecessarily time-consuming to notice and mark student's name on the attendance sheet. This also happens that some students may accidentally or willingly mark the student's name like as proxy. The hard copy of attendance sheet may get lost. Using Smartphone like as Android Technology the course teacher will be able to take attendance easily by our designed mobile application and save the attendance in the phone as well as in server and can check percentage and also can print as hard copy. Using the stored information, this system is able to mark attendance, marking intruders' entry, attendance percentage calculations, send emails, and send SMS to the guardian to keep them updated about their child's attendance at the Institute. The designed system has an online access from any place and any moment which may extraordinarily assist the course teacher with keeping track of their student's attendance.

Development of smartphone-based student attendance system

Fingerprint attendance system aims to automate the attendance procedure of an educational institution using biometric technology. This will save time wasted on calling out names and it gives a fool-proof method of attendance marking. A hand-held device is used to mark the attendance without the intervention of teacher. The device can be passed and students can mark attendance during the lecture time. Students would be made to place their finger over the sensor so as to mark their presence in the class. It can communicate with a host computer using its USB interface. This device operates from a rechargeable battery. GUI application in host computer helps the teacher to manage the device and attendance.
