This paper presents the basic equations for a mathematical model of sediment-laden flow in a nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. The equations were derived using a tensor analysis of two-phase flow and incorporate a natural variable-density turbulence model with nonequilibrium sediment transport. Correspondingly, a free-surface and the bottom sediment concentration are employed to provide the boundary conditions at the river surface and the riverbed. The finite analytic method is used to solve the equations of mass and momentum conservation and also the transport equation for suspended sediment. To demonstrate the method, the sediment deposition for the Three Gorges Project is considered. The mathematical model specifies the boundary conditions for the inlet and outlet using data from physical model experiments. The results for the mathematical model were tested against laboratory measurements from the physical model experiment. Good agreement and accuracy were obtained.

Three-Dimensional Mathematical Model of Suspended-Sediment Transport

The three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation of a steady, shallow turbulent flow around a groyne in a rectangular channel is presented. A method used to track a moving surface boundary and to follow its evolution, using a one-phase 3D Reynolds solver with rigid grids, by means of a transient fraction of fluid or “porosity” field is applied. Some results are compared with experimental data, such as the isolines of water depths and the mean velocity field. A comparison of the reattachment length prediction using the free-surface model and the rigid-lid assumption is given. Other results concerning the pressure field, turbulence, or shear stress distribution are presented and analyzed.

Three-dimensional computation of flow around groyne

. The Hoa Binh dam (HBD), located on a tributary of the Red River in Vietnam, has a capacity of 9.45 × 109 m3 and was commissioned in December 1988. Although it is important for flood prevention, electricity production and irrigation in northern Vietnam, the Hoa Binh dam has also highly influenced the suspended sediment distribution in the lower Red River basin, in the delta and in the coastal zone. Its impact was analysed from a 50-year data set of water discharge and suspended sediment concentration (1960–2010), and the distribution of water and sediment across the nine mouths of the delta was simulated using the MIKE11 numerical model before and after the dam settlement. Although water discharge at the delta inlet decreased by only 9%, the yearly suspended sediment flux dropped, on average, by 61% at Son Tay near Hanoi (from 119 to 46 × 106 t yr−1). Along the coast, reduced sedimentation rates are coincident with the lower sediment delivery observed since the impoundment of the Hoa Binh dam. Water regulation has led to decreased water discharge in the wet season (−14% in the Red River at Son Tay) and increased water discharge in the dry season (+12% at the same station). The ratios of water and suspended sediment flows, as compared to the total flows in the nine mouths, increased in the northern and southern estuaries and decreased in the central, main Ba Lat mouth. The increasing volume of dredged sediments in the Haiphong harbour is evidence of the silting up of the northern estuary of Cam–Bach Dang. The effect of tidal pumping on enhanced flow occurring in the dry season and resulting from changed water regulation is discussed as a possible cause of the enhanced siltation of the estuary after Hoa Binh dam impoundment.

In the present study, flow patterns around a single spur dike (also termed a groyne) with free-surface flow was simulated using a numerical model known as Fluent. The model solved the fully three-dimensional, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation to predict flow near the structure where three-dimensional flow is dominant. To treat the complex free-surface flow, the volume of fluid method with geometric reconstruction scheme was applied and turbulence was simulated using standard equations. In this research work, both a structured and an unstructured mesh were used and the density of the mesh spacing was selected the highest near the walls and also free surface to obtain more accurate results. Comparison of free surface and velocities of 3D model showed good agreement with three experimental flume data obtained by other researchers. 3D simulation of flow around a single spur dike with free-surface flow

The mathematical model for simulating suspended sediment transport under equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations is described. Using the hydrodynamic variable field obtained from a refined turbulent free surface flow model, the suspension transport model involves bed boundary conditions for either the sediment flux to or from the bed, or an estimated concentration level, which are tested. The Schmidt number variability is also studied for several particle types. Some 2D vertical test cases for equilibrium situations or non-equilibrium situations with net erosion or net deposition flux to the bed are presented, and the predicted development of the concentration profiles is compared with measurements.
