A safety cut-off system prevents the running of a motor of a self-propelled lawn mower having left and right drive wheels, and forward and reverse gears. The safety cut-off system includes a first forward presence lever manipulatable, by an operator, between an ON state and an OFF state, wherein the forward presence lever is biased to the OFF state, and a reverse presence lever manipulatable, by an operator, between an ON state and an OFF state, wherein the reverse presence lever is also biased to the OFF state. A preventing element, which is responsive to the forward and reverse presence levers, is provided for preventing the motor from running, when the lawn mower is in neutral or a forward gear and neither the forward presence lever nor the reverse presence lever are in the ON state, and when the lawn mower is in a reverse gear and the reverse presence lever is not in the ON state.

Safety cut-off system for use in walk-behind power tool

A lawn mower including a blade housing supporting a prime mover which drives a cutter blade. The prime mover causes rotation of a drive shaft and a clutch driven by the drive shaft is engagable and disengagable with the cutter blade. A handle is connected to the housing and a dead man control is pivotally attached to the handle. The lawn mower further includes an arrangement operable to permit the engagement and disengagement of the clutch means by the pivotal movement of the dead man control. This arrangement includes a flexible member connecting the dead man control and the clutch and an arrangement restricting a substantial portion of the flexible member to a predetermined path along the handle. The restricting arrangement includes a pulley rotatably attached to the handle between the dead man control and the housing and the flexible member is guided around the pulley. In one embodiment, the mower is self-propelled and includes wheels connected to the housing to support travel of the housing over the ground. The mower also includes a mower propelling arrangement engagable with the wheels. An upper handle is movably attached to a guiding handle and a link connects the upper handle to the mower propelling arrangement. The link is movable in response to movement of the upper handle to cause engagement of the mower propelling arrangement. The self-propelled lawn mower has the dead man control movably attached to the upper handle and the pulley has a periphery generally adjacent the attachment of the upper handle to the guiding handle so the upper handle and dead man control can be operated independently.

Lawn mower dead man control

A large capacity, self-propelled walk-behind power tool, such as a lawn mower, employs gear-operated transmissions for independently driving each drive wheel. Control handles are connected to idler pulley levers and brake levers to control the movement of the driving wheels. A constant input rate to the control handles results in a variable output rate to the idler pulley levers and the brake levers.

Drive control for self-propelled power tool

A transmission casing (3) having a wheel axle (6) extending leftwards and rightwards therefrom is supported by a machine frame (1) rotatably about the axle for providing a main clutch (9) which is engaged and disengaged by a selective tightening and loosening of an input belt (8) for the transmission casing as a result of a selective rotational displacement of the casing. An auxiliary clutch (10) is disposed within the casing and between a speed-change mechanism (7) and the axle. These clutches (9, 10) are normally kept disengaged by individual spring means (12, 13). A rotatable clutch-control arm (11; 116) is provided which is operated by a clutch lever (14) so as to engage the auxiliary clutch (10). Upon completion of an engagement of this clutch, the control arm is engaged to a stop means (15) on the transmission casing such that further rotational displacement of this arm causes a rotational displacement of the casing towards a direction of engaging the main clutch (9). The main and auxiliary clutches co-operate to lighten a speed-change operation and mower-moving operation by an operator. The main clutch is simple in structure and both of the clutches are operated by a single operating system.

Disclosed herein is a lawn mower comprising a prime mover mounted on a housing and including an output shaft extending into the housing, a first pulley sheave fixed to the output shaft for common rotation therewith and including an inclined surface, a blade assembly mounted on the output shaft for relative rotation therebetween and including a cutter blade, and a combined pulley sheave and brake drum fixed to said cutter blade, which combined pulley sheave and brake drum includes a pulley sheave portion comprising an inclined surface facing the inclined surface of the first pulley sheave and a brake drum portion, an endless member trained between the inclined surfaces, an idler pulley around which the endless member is trained and mounted on the housing for movement between a first position locating the idler pulley to remove slack from the endless belt, thereby drivingly connecting the first and second sheaves for common rotation, and a second position locating the idler pulley to permit slack in the endless member, thereby permitting relative rotation between the first and second sheaves, a brake band anchored at one end to the housing and movable between a braking position engagable with the brake drum portion and a non-braking position spaced from the brake drum portion, which brake band is fabricated of resilient material and is self-biasing into the braking position, which brake band is also connected to the idler pulley so as to bias the idler pulley to the second position, and a handle adapted to be operated by a user for displacing the idler pulley to the first position and the brake band to the non-braking position against the biasing action of the brake band.
