Abstract: Methods have been described for the preparation of tritiated carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of high specific activity by the Wilzbach method. A large number of highly radioactive impurities were produced during the exposure to tritium gas, and extensive purification was required. This was achieved by column chromatography followed by various paper chromatographic systems with some novel modifications. The following compounds were labeled by this method: 10-methyl-1,2-benzanthracene, 3-methyl-1,2-benzanthracene, 4-methyl-1,2-benzanthracene, 3-fluoro-10-methyl-1,2-benzanthracene, 4-fluoro-10-methyl-1,2-benzanthracene, 1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene, 1,2,3,4-dibenzanthracene, 9,10-dimethyl-1,2,5,6-dibenzanthracene, 3,4-benzpyrene, 3-methylcholanthrene, 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene, anthanthrene, and 2-phenylphenanthrene-3,2′-dialdehyde.
