In an innovative sequence of topics, Ken Dowden explores the uses Greeks made of myth and the uses to which we can put myth in recovering the richness of their culture. Most aspects of Greek life and history - including war, religion and sexuality - which are discernable through myth, as well as most modern approaches, are given a context in a book which is designed to be useful, accessible and stimulating.

The uses of Greek mythology

. In this paper, I examine some of the past and current issues in
anti-colonial discourse by briefly reviewing the ideas of thirteen anti-colonial
scholars from different regions of the world. I relate these ideas to the discussion
of knowledge production and indigenous knowledges. I also examine some
critical areas that require more attention from future decolonizing scholarship
and practice. With respect to scholarship, these critical areas include: the question
of agency; the ambivalence towards Euro-American thought; recognizing
the dynamism among knowledge systems; language accessibility; integrating
indigenous ways of knowing, and dismantling the academic regime. In addition,
I suggest that the questions of decolonizing one’s spirit and recognizing
the importance of spirituality, often ignored, are very important to integrate
in decolonizing practice. This paper concludes by challenging anti-colonial
scholars to open possibilities for ourselves and others by “walking the talk᾿
in our scholarly endeavours and every day lives.

RESUME. Dans ce document, j’examine certaines des themes du discours anticolonial
passes et presents en passant en revue rapidement les idees de treize
penseurs anticoloniaux de differentes regions du monde. Je relie ces idees avec
la discussion a propos de la production de connaissance et des connaissances
autochtones. J’examine aussi certains espaces critiques qui requierent plus
d’attention pour les etudes ou des pratiques decolonisatrices. Ces espaces
critiques comprennent: la question de l‘agencement, l’ambivalence face aux
pensees Euro-americaines, l’identification du dynamisme parmi les systemes
de connaissances, l’accessibilite au langage, comment integrer les manieres
autochtones de savoir et comment demonter le regime universitaire. En
plus, j’ajouterai que la question concernant la decolonisation de l’esprit et la
reconnaissance de l’importance de la spiritualite, souvent ignorees, sont tres
important pour integrer des pratiques decolonisatrices. Ce document finit par
lancer un defit aux chercheurs anticoloniaux d’ouvrir des possibilites pour
nous-memes et par les autres, et de « marcher comme ils parlent » (« walk
the talk ») dans nos efforts scolaires et notre vie de tous les jours.

Mapping the Field of Anti-Colonial Discourse to Understand Issues of Indigenous Knowledges: Decolonizing Praxis

This research explores the region of Arkadia in the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age using an interpretative and phenomenologically inspired approach. It is region associated with many myths pointing to a continuing population throughout the period, yet beset with a problematic archaeological record. This has been the result of a number of factors ranging from the nature of the landscape to the history of research. However, the ability to locate sites of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age within the landscape, allows insight into a region we had little hope of enlightening using more conventional approaches to the archaeological record. This theoretical and methodological stance is illustrated through an exploration of different aspects of the human experience such as religion, death and burial and the everyday. The ways in which these aspects can and usually are interpreted are considered, followed by a number of case studies, which are employed to explore how human actions were embedded within and informed by the very physicality of the landscape, and the differences apparent throughout time.

Hopi clan migration traditions appear to hold valuable knowledge about precontact Puebloan life. Some scholars, however, question the historical veracity of these migration stories, noting that small, unilineal, exogamous groups cannot move independently, nor are they likely to have persisted for the hundreds of years necessary to maintain the knowledge attributed to them. Reexamination of the units and mechanisms of information curation underlying Hopi traditions provides new insights into the nature of Hopi clans and the manner of their reproduction. Rather than kinship units organized by a dogma of unilineal descent, Hopi clans are shown to operate as local groups--Levi-Straussian "houses"--organized by the control of ceremonies and the ritual objects that authenticate them. Heritage is traced not through a genealogy of lineal ancestors, but through a topogeny of places where the proprietary ceremony has been performed by a succession of custodial house-groups.
