Solutions comprising a sodium silicate waterglass having a modulus of less than 3 and at least 8% by weight of an organic polyhydroxy compound such as glycerol are useful in the production of interlayers used in fire resistant glass laminates. The solutions are dried on a flat surface such as glass to produce a clear intumescent interlayer having improved impact resistance. The dried interlayer may be removed from the surface in the form of an elastomeric material which may also be used as an interlayer in a fire resistant glazing.

Fire resistant glazings

A transparent heat-swellable material, a method for its preparation and fire-resistant glazing panels in which it is incorporated, are provided by a mixture of hydrated alkali metal silicate and an additive selected from polyalcohols and mono-or polysaccharides, in which the additive content is in the range of 5 to 22 % by weight, the water content is in the range of 12 to 19.5 % by weight, and the hydrated alkali metal silicate has a silicon oxide (SiO2): alkali metal oxide molar ratio greater than 3.3 to 1. Glazing panels including the said material offer thermal insulation of greater than 30 minutes, a barrier to flames and fumes for greater than 90 minutes and thermal radiation of less than 10 kW/m , or even of less than 6 kW/m , after 90 minutes.

Fire resistant glazings having improved properties comprising a silicate based interlayer which contains from 35% to 43% by weight of water may be produced using a cast in place process. The amount of water in the interlayer is reduced by concentrating the silicate solution or by introducing silica in the form of a silica sol. Preferably a mixture of an aqueous sol and an organosol is used. Polyhydroxy compounds and saccharides may be incorporated into the interlayer to improve the properties thereof and to reduce the water content. The silicate based formulations are pourable and can be used in a cast in place production process and subsequently cured to form an optically clear interlayer.

Method for the production of fire resistant glazings

Fire protection glasses comprise at least two fire resistant interlayers (2) which are from 0.5 to 1.0 mm thick sandwiched between at least three glass panes (1,4,5). The interlayers are formed by drying a waterglass solution upon the surface of the glass. Fire resistance rating G30/F15 can be achieved by a fire protection glass which is less than 10 mm thick. One of the glass panes may be a laminated glass pane where improved safety performance is desired.

Fire protection glass

Flame retardant glass has two panes arranged at a distance from each other, where the flame-sided pane is a glass pane and a foamed intermediate layer is arranged in the space between the panes. The intermediate layer is made of sodium silicate glass and water and has an additive increasing the resistance time in the case of a fire, which is displaced with multivalent alcohols and/or sugars. The novelty is that the sodium silicate glass as additive to the intermediate layer to suppress the sensitivity of the intermediate layer towards UV radiation is chosen so that there is no more sensitivity towards UV light.

Fire resistant glass unit

A fire resistant glass structure in which the intervening layer between the panes has a portion of its polyhydric organic compounds replaced by potassium water glass in a layer which consists primarily of sodium water glass. The replacement eliminates ultraviolet light sensitivity without reduction in the increase in the duration of fire resistance provided by the organic compound.
