A network system and method include a wireless base station integrated at a central office of a service provider. The wireless base station is configured to provide portable and fixed services to customers. A passive optical network is coupled to the wireless base station at the central office to provide a link to extend an antenna for wireless operations of the wireless base station to a remote site such that a wireless signal from the wireless base station is transmitted in parallel with a passive fiber network signal through the link.

System and method for providing wireless over a passive optical network (PON)

The present invention discloses a low-cost light source for optical transmission systems and optical networks based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology. A light source in accordance with the present invention is implemented by externally injecting a narrow-band incoherent light into a Fabry-Perot laser diode (F-P LD). After injection of narrow-band incoherent light, the output of F-P LD becomes wavelength-selective rather than multi-mode and the output wavelength of F-P LD coincide with the peak wavelength of the injected incoherent light. Multi-channel WDM light sources according to the present invention can be implemented using a single broadband incoherent light source and plurality of F-P LDs. An optical transmission system for upstream signal transmission in an passive optical network using the light source according the present invention is also disclosed.

A method for processing data flows of a plurality of passive optical network (PON) operating modes, the method is performed by an optical network unit (ONU). The method comprises processing upstream data flows of said plurality of PON operating modes; and processing downstream data flows of the plurality of PON operating modes. The plurality of PON operating modes include at least a Gigabit PON (GPON) mode, a broadband PON (BPON) mode, and an Ethernet PON (EPON).

The present invention includes novel techniques, apparatus, and systems for optical WDM communications. Tunable lasers are employed to generate subcarrier frequencies representing subchannels of an ITU channel to which client signals can be mapped. Client circuits can be divided and combined before being mapped, independent of one another, to individual subchannels within and across ITU channels. Subchannels may be independently routed to a single subchannel receiver filter, such that each subchannel detected at the receiver may come from a different source location. Network architectures and subchannel transponders, muxponders and crossponders are disclosed, and techniques are employed (at the subchannel level/layer), to facilitate the desired optical routing, switching, concatenation and protection of client circuits mapped to these subchannels across the nodes of a WDM network. Subchannel hopping may also be used to increase the optical network security.

Wavelength division multiplexing (“WDM”) passive optical networks (“PON”) to transport signals having various access platforms are described. For one embodiment, a WDM PON performs bi-directional communications, and includes an interface. The interface transfers one or more signals having a first platform to a WDM-PON data transmission platform at an access point of a network to propagate through a single transmission medium, to one or more remote distribution nodes in between a Central Office and an optical network unit. The single transmission medium carriers three or more optical channels traveling in both directions.
