Abstract: IN 1937 Crowther et al.1 described a rhythmical increase and decrease of the electrophoretic mobility of colloidal carbon particles with increasing X-ray doses. Similar rhythmical variations of the electrokinetic potential (ζ-potential) were later described even for suspensions of various other colloidal particles and after irradiation with radiation sources of different quality and intensity2,3. The mechanism of this peculiar phenomenon is unknown. Changes of the electrophoretic potential have been shown with doses of only a few rads.
