The hybrid library is a term that has entered the parlance of the library and information profession in the past three years. It is viewed as a halfway step towards the fully digital library. In this paper, the history of the concept is outlined, together with the important influence the Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib) has had in funding hybrid library projects. A proposed model of the hybrid library was developed and was shown to the eLib hybrid library projects. Reactions to the model were obtained. In addition, the paper reports the results of in-depth discussions with the project staff regarding how the hybrid library will evolve. It is clear that the development of the hybrid library depends more upon cultural shift than technological development. What Is the Hybrid Library

Many and varied information sources are used by researchers and managers across sectors relevant to public policy development. When aggregated, these sources can be described in terms of sector‐specific information landscapes. This paper describes results from a survey that investigated such landscapes and relates them to the working practices of those for whom they were relevant. This is achieved through the use of co‐word or co‐term analysis, a technique derived from actor‐network theory. This technique allows for the production of graphic plots of normalised free text term pairs, which take into account inclusiveness. The results suggest that knowledge communities can be identified by this technique.

Describes a study, which investigates the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC ) use behavior of foreign postgraduate students at the University of Malaya Library. This involves their ability to use OPAC, their knowledge about OPAC, and the reasons for the effective use of OPAC. The results indicate that most of the students from developing countries possess various levels of OPAC use abilities. Most indicate that there are no OPAC facilities in their home countries, and if available, it is limited to university libraries. OPAC searches are mainly for title, subject, author/title keyword, and author. Title searches are the most frequently used. Students using the University of Malaya Library indicate that the OPAC is relatively easy to use but students are moderately successful in locating items. Students selftrained themselves when using the OPAC. Most did not receive any training or learnt it from the Library and for those who attended the training programme, the majority of them noted that it has been successful. Most of the students are generally unaware of other facilities that are available in the OPAC.

Foreign postgraduate students and the online catalogue at the university of malaya library

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to present the results of a research study conducted to assess the perceptions and opinions of 100 staff working in libraries on the impact of using IT on library housekeeping operations and information services, in eight central university libraries in India.Design/methodology/approach – Data gathering tools used include questionnaire, observation and informal interviews with selected library professionals.Findings – Iinformation technology had a tremendous impact on the efficiency of library operations and the delivery of information services. Use of IT has facilitated networking and resource sharing, eliminated duplication of effort, improved the speed of operations, increased access to information resources and improved the quality of information services.Originality/value – This is a pioneering study on the impact of using IT in the central university libraries in India.
