An end-user questionnaire to measure user experience quickly in a simple and immediate way while covering a preferably comprehensive impression of the product user experience was the goal of the reported construction process. An empirical approach for the item selection was used to ensure practical relevance of items. Usability experts collected terms and statements on user experience and usability, including `hard' as well as `soft' aspects. These statements were consolidated and transformed into a first questionnaire version containing 80 bipolar items. It was used to measure the user experience of software products in several empirical studies. Data were subjected to a factor analysis which resulted in the construction of a 26 item questionnaire including the six factors Attractiveness, Perspicuity, Efficiency, Dependability, Stimulation, and Novelty. Studies conducted for the original German questionnaire and an English version indicate a satisfactory level of reliability and construct validity.

Construction and Evaluation of a User Experience Questionnaire

Visual aesthetics has been shown to critically affect a variety of constructs such as perceived usability, satisfaction, and pleasure. Given the importance of visual aesthetics in human-computer interaction, it is vital that it is adequately assessed. The present research aimed at providing a precise operational definition and to develop a new measure of perceived visual aesthetics of websites. Construction of the Visual Aesthetics of Website Inventory (VisAWI) was based on a comprehensive and broad definition of visual aesthetics so that the resulting instrument would completely describe the domain of interest. Four interrelated facets of perceived visual aesthetics of websites were identified and validated in a series of seven studies. Simplicity and Diversity have repeatedly been treated as formal parameters of aesthetic objects throughout the history of empirical aesthetics, Colors are a critical property of aesthetic objects, and Craftsmanship addresses the skillful and coherent integration of the relevant design dimensions. These four facets jointly represent perceived visual aesthetics, but are still distinguishable from each other and carry unique meaning. The subscales contained in the VisAWI demonstrate good internal consistencies. Evidence for the convergent, divergent, discriminative, and concurrent validity of the VisAWI is provided. Overall, the present research suggests that the VisAWI appears to be a sound measure of visual aesthetics of websites comprising facets of both practical and theoretical interest.

Facets of visual aesthetics

The user experience questionnaire (UEQ) is a widely used questionnaire to measure the subjective impression of users towards the user experience of products. The UEQ is a semantic differential with 26 items. Filling out the UEQ takes approximately 3-5 minutes, i.e. the UEQ is already reasonably efficient concerning the time required to answer all items. However, there exist several valid application scenarios, where filling out the entire UEQ appears impractical. This paper deals with the creation of an 8 item short version of the UEQ, which is optimized for these specific application scenarios. First validations of this short version are also described.

UX Curve: A method for evaluating long-term user experience

A good user experience is central for the success of interactive products. To improve products concerning these quality aspects it is thus also important to be able to measure user experience in an efficient and reliable way. But measuring user experience is not an end in itself. Several different questions can be the reason behind the wish to measure the user experience of a product quantitatively. We discuss several typical questions associated with the measurement of user experience and we show how these questions can be answered with a questionnaire with relatively low effort. In this paper the user experience questionnaire UEQ is used, but the general approach may be transferred to other questionnaires as well.

Applying the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) in Different Evaluation Scenarios

Mit dem User Experience Questionnaire wurde ein Fragebogen entwickelt, der eine schnelle Messung verschiedener Kriterien der Softwarequalität erlaubt. Die Relevanz der Kriterien für die Beurteilung wurde durch eine empirische Selektion sichergestellt. Experten sammelten und reduzierten eine große Menge potenziell relevanter Begriffe und Aussagen, die sowohl „harte“ Usability-Kriterien als auch „weichere“ User Experience-Kriterien einschlossen. Der daraus entstandene ursprüngliche Fragebogen mit bipolaren 80 Items wurde in mehreren Untersuchungen eingesetzt und durch eine Faktorenanalyse auf 26 Items reduziert, die sich den sechs Faktoren Attaktivität, Durchschaubarkeit, Effizienz, Vorhersagbarkeit, Stimulation und Originalität zuordnen lassen. Erste Validierungsuntersuchungen deuten auf eine zufriedenstellende Konstruktvalidität hin.

The influence of hedonic quality on the attractiveness of user interfaces of business management software

Das Gebrauchstauglichkeitskriterium der Benutzerzufriedenstellung kann auf verschiedene Weise quantifiziert werden. Eine Möglichkeit sind Fragebögen, die auf eine spontane und möglichst unreflektierte Beurteilung eines Produkts abzielen können. Ein Beispiel für einen solchen Fragebogen ist der User Experience Questionnaire UEQ (Laugwitz et al. 2006). Berichtet wird über die Verwendung des Fragebogens in der Qualitätssicherung bei der Entwicklung von Business-Software bei DATEV. Zum anderen werden zwei wissenschaftliche Studien vorgestellt, in denen der UEQ ebenfalls eingesetzt wurde. Aus den dargestellten Erfahrungen werden zusammenfassend Vorzüge, Einschränkungen und Empfehlungen für den erfolgreichen Einsatz von Fragebögen in Usability-Praxis und Forschung abgeleitet.
