A new hybrid method is described for the design and planning of passive optical networks (PONs). The method utilises expert system and evolutionary computing techniques to produce 'most fit' PON designs taking into account practical planning rules and constraints. The implementation of the planning tool is described with reference to the planning process, design factors and optimisation goals. Example results of centralised-split PON designs are shown which demonstrate the optimised placement of network plant such as spur joints, splitters and distribution points.

Increasing Residential Capacity in Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network using High Splitting Ratio

Passive optical networks (PONs) are an important and interesting technology for broadband access as a result of the growing demand for bandwidth over the past 10 years. An arduous and complex step in the design of such networks involves determining the placement of equipment, optical fiber cables and several other parameters relevant to the proper functioning of the network. In this paper, we propose an evolutionary strategy to optimize the infrastructure design of PONs by using genetic algorithm technique. This meta-heuristic is capable of elaborating fast, automatic and efficient solutions for the design and planning of PONs. Our proposal has been developed using real maps, aiming to minimize deployment costs and time spent to carry out PON projects, achieving pre-defined quality criteria. We considered, in our simulations, two scenarios (non-dense and dense), four possible topologies and two regions of interest. The non-dense consists of a scenario in which subscribers are distributed in a dispersed manner in the region of interest. The dense has a considerably higher number of subscribers distributed in a very close way to each other. Based on the obtained results, the potential of our proposal is quite clear, as well as its relevance from a technical, economic, and commercial point of view.

Evolutionary Strategy for Practical Design of Passive Optical Networks

Internet network design specialists are looking for technologies and strategies to deliver network service under increased demand conditions. The choice of strategies is based on applying optimization and decision-making methods to select the most appropriate cable network design considering criteria established by the problem definition. However, this definition is itself a decision problem that has not received analysis in the literature. In particular, one of the most important questions is the necessity to define an expansion strategy. The first alternative (expansion) is to design a network to serve consumers with Internet demand equal to or greater than the predefined one to expand the network annually to serve consumers that reach the predefined Internet speed. The second alternative (oversizing) is to design a network to serve consumers with future Internet demand (after 5 years) at or above that the predefined one. Considering this, the objective of this research is to define the most advantageous strategy of expansion planning to attend a 5 years forecasted Internet demand, considering: (1) the possibility of utilizing a Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network technology; (2) the application of the minimal Steiner tree and Dijkstra algorithms in planning procedures; (3) the influence of economic and technological factors on the demand forecast; (4) the aggressive, moderate, and conservative scenarios in decision-making. The results show that the over-dimensioning strategy reduces network investment by between 30 and 41%, but that this reduction does not always lead to a market investment ratio higher than that observed in the expansion strategy.

Expand or Oversize? Planning Internet Access Network in a Demand Growth Scenario

Nowadays, fiber-based access networks are considered to be a major solution to provide the triple-play (voice, video and data) services. However, telecom companies are forced to provide a cost effective solution due to the rapid technological evolution and fierce competition. Return on investment for the deployment of Greenfield networks or transformation of existing legacy networks need to be maximized. In addition, the network should be designed in such a way that it is easy to deploy and to maintain. To achieve these objectives, an intelligent network planning system is required to minimize the cost of network design with the practical considerations to alleviate the future maintenance. In this paper, we provide an approach that uses road information in order to tackle the FTTH access network planning problem with the focus on handling practical scenarios.

Towards achieving practical GPON FTTH designs

Nowadays, many telecom operators consider fiber-based access networks as a major solution to provide bandwidth hungry services such as High Definition TV over IPTV, online gaming, video streaming, high speed Internet, etc. However, today's telecom market is facing tough competitions with very tight budget and limited human resources. Return on investment for the deployment of new networks or transformation of legacy networks to fiber-based networks need to be maximized. One way to minimize the capital expenditure (CAPEX) costs is through automation of the network design. Not only can it reduce the time and the cost of manual design but it can also optimize the design with a minimum cost. In this paper, our network planning system based on the mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach is proposed with the main focus on solving practical scenarios which are related to design constraints with clear boundaries of planning areas. Advantages of having clear boundaries from the practical point of view are discussed in detail and the model to solve this problem is provided.
