Textiles have been concomitant of human civilization for thousands of years. With the advances in chemistry and materials, integrating textiles with energy harvesters will provide a sustainable, environmentally friendly, pervasive, and wearable energy solution for distributed on-body electronics in the era of Internet of Things. This article comprehensively and thoughtfully reviews research activities regarding the utilization of smart textiles for harvesting energy from renewable energy sources on the human body and its surroundings. Specifically, we start with a brief introduction to contextualize the significance of smart textiles in light of the emerging energy crisis, environmental pollution, and public health. Next, we systematically review smart textiles according to their abilities to harvest biomechanical energy, body heat energy, biochemical energy, solar energy as well as hybrid forms of energy. Finally, we provide a critical analysis of smart textiles and insights into remaining challenges and future directions. With worldwide efforts, innovations in chemistry and materials elaborated in this review will push forward the frontiers of smart textiles, which will soon revolutionize our lives in the era of Internet of Things.

Application of k-means and hierarchical clustering techniques for analysis of air pollution: A review (1980–2019)

Global Change Biology Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd Increasing both crop productivity and the tolerance of crops to abiotic and biotic stresses is a major challenge for global food security in our rapidly changing climate. For the first time, we show how the spatial variation and severity of tropospheric ozone effects on yield compare with effects of other stresses on a global scale, and discuss mitigating actions against the negative effects of ozone. We show that the sensitivity to ozone declines in the order soybean > wheat > maize > rice, with genotypic variation in response being most pronounced for soybean and rice. Based on stomatal uptake, we estimate that ozone (mean of 2010–2012) reduces global yield annually by 12.4%, 7.1%, 4.4% and 6.1% for soybean, wheat, rice and maize, respectively (the “ozone yield gaps”), adding up to 227 Tg of lost yield. Our modelling shows that the highest ozone-induced production losses for soybean are in North and South America whilst for wheat they are in India and China, for rice in parts of India, Bangladesh, China and Indonesia, and for maize in China and the United States. Crucially, we also show that the same areas are often also at risk of high losses from pests and diseases, heat stress and to a lesser extent aridity and nutrient stress. In a solution-focussed analysis of these results, we provide a crop ideotype with tolerance of multiple stresses (including ozone) and describe how ozone effects could be included in crop breeding programmes. We also discuss altered crop management approaches that could be applied to reduce ozone impacts in the shorter term. Given the severity of ozone effects on staple food crops in areas of the world that are also challenged by other stresses, we recommend increased attention to the benefits that could be gained from addressing the ozone yield gap.

Closing the global ozone yield gap: Quantification and cobenefits for multistress tolerance

A detailed investigation has been conducted to evaluate the distribution of heavy metals and metalloid in the surface sediments of a bauxite mining area in association with the potential ecological and human health risk. Field sampling was carried out within the Pengerang bauxite mining areas, including mine tailings, ex-mining pond and streams. Distribution of heavy metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Sr, Zn) and metalloid such as As in sediments indicated that Fe and Al constituted the greatest portion of metal elements in the sediment while Pb and Cu were found exceeding the recommended guideline values at some locations. Assessment of potential ecological risk (PERI) demonstrated low to medium ecological risk in the metal-contaminated sediments with Cd, As and Pb have generally greater risk compared to other metals, contributing the most to the total risk index (RI). The sediment enrichment factor (EF) indicated no enrichment of most metals while Pb and As at some locations were classified as having minor and moderately to severe enrichment. The geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and contamination factor (CF) indicated that the sediments were classified uncontaminated with respect to most metals. Assessment of potential human health risk revealed that the hazard index (HI) values of the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were an order of magnitude higher among children compared to adults. Assessment of air pollution around coal mining area: Emphasizing on spatial distributions, seasonal variations and heavy metals, using cluster and principal component analysis

Coal mining activities are inevitably connected with production of acidic drainage and airborne compounds such as fly ash and bottom ash with high metal content. Soil is a prominent sink for trace elements discharged from anthropogenic sources. Thus, understanding the occurrence, accessibility and ecological risk of trace elements around coal mining areas is of utmost importance in view of implications for environmental health. Seventy-five soil samples from 25 different sites were collected from Jharia coal field (India) and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon, and trace elements. For the background values of trace elements, black shale and sandstone were collected from the study area and analyzed for trace element concentrations. Sampled soils were evaluated for the level of soil contamination with respect to average shale concentrations of toxic trace elements in the region and assessed for their ecological risk in terms of enrichment factor, contamination factor, and pollution load index. Interactions among different trace elements and their spatial distribution were analyzed by the use of multivariate approaches. The study also quantifies the potential sources of contamination for each element and their relation with emission source. The average concentrations of Pb, Ni, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, and Cd in the soil exceeded the world averages, while Cu and Zn overstepped their respective critical limit in the soil. Enrichment factor values showed that soil near coal mine areas was loaded with Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, and Ni. The pollution load index and contamination factor suggest that the soils were contaminated by all the investigated trace elements and areas near coal mines were the most polluted. The absolute principal component score technique, combined with multiple linear regression analysis revealed three major factors, coal mining activities/mine fires (40 %), windblown dust (23 %), and crustal (24 %), were responsible for soil trace element pollution in the area. Coal mining activities, mine fires, and windblown dust are the chief contributors of soil pollution in the area. Coal mining activities/mine fires are the main contributing sources to soil Ni, Cu, and Cr, while crustal input was mainly represented by Mn and Zn and windblown dust for Pb, Fe, and Cd. High concentrations of trace elements at any site depend on the feasibility and availability of respective pollution sources.

Ecological risk assessment of soil contamination by trace elements around coal mining area

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of coal mining activities on the community structures of woody and herbaceous plants. The response of individual plants of community to defilement caused by coal mining was also assessed. Air monitoring, soil physico-chemical and phytosociological analyses were carried around Jharia coalfield (JCF) and Raniganj coalfield. The importance value index of sensitive species minified and those of tolerant species enhanced with increasing pollution load and altered soil quality around coal mining areas. Although the species richness of woody and herbaceous plants decreased with higher pollution load, a large number of species acclimatized to the stress caused by the coal mining activities. Woody plant community at JCF was more affected by coal mining than herbaceous community. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that structure of herbaceous community was mainly driven by soil total organic carbon, soil nitrogen, whereas woody layer community was influenced by sulphur dioxide in ambient air, soil sulphate and soil phosphorus. The changes in species diversity observed at mining areas indicated an increase in the proportion of resistant herbs and grasses showing a tendency towards a definite selection strategy of ecosystem in response to air pollution and altered soil characteristics.

Coal mining activities change plant community structure due to air pollution and soil degradation

Increasing concern about global climate change is enabling many industries to pursue projects on “carbon footprint” to estimate their own contributions to the changing climate. About 21% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are contributed by industrial sector, of which aluminum industries accounted for ∼1.0%. The chapter aims to assess the nature of pollutants and emission scenario of GHGs from different processes of aluminum production. A cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment of aluminum industry showed dominant emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride. In view of these, target to cut down carbon emissions up to 50% by 2050 cannot be accomplished by just making policies and regulations, but could only be achieved through reduced demand for final goods, and other existing and developing strategies to mitigate carbon emissions. The chapter consolidates available information on carbon emissions from aluminum production and existing and emerging technologies (reformation of conventional technologies in aluminum production, recycling of waste aluminum products and carbon trading) to alleviate carbon emissions, with an intent to provide well-structured database of available information on mitigation of carbon emissions.
