Given the escalating population across the globe, it has become paramount to construct smart cities, aiming for improving the management of urban flows relying on efficient information and communication technologies (ICT). Vehicular sensing networks (VSNs) play a critical role in maintaining the efficient operation of smart cities. Naturally, there are numerous challenges to be solved before the wide-spread introduction of VSNs, including the conception of an accurate topological analysis method and a beneficial cooperation mechanism during the process of city-wide information sharing. Hence, in this article, we construct a VSN-aided smart city model and appraise a range of intelligent applications in terms of both public services and urban flow management. Then, the information source selection algorithm of a complex network and a reinforcement learning based city information sharing mechanism are considered, complemented by a range of open challenges.

Vehicular Sensing Networks in a Smart City: Principles, Technologies and Applications

Vehicular networks are one of the main technologies that will be leveraged by the arrival of future fifth-generation (5G) mobile cellular networks. While scalability and latency are the major drawbacks of IEEE 802.11p and fourth-generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-enabled vehicular communications, respectively, the 5G technology is a promising solution to empower the real-time services offered by vehicular networks. However, the security and privacy of such services in 5G-enabled vehicular networks need to be addressed first. In this paper, we propose a novel system model for a 5G-enabled vehicular network that facilitates a reliable, secure, and privacy-aware real-time video reporting service. This service is designed for participating vehicles to instantly report the videos of traffic accidents to guarantee a timely response from official vehicles and/or ambulances toward accidents. While it provides strong security and privacy guarantees for the participating vehicle's identity and the video contents, the proposed service ensures traceability of misbehaving participants through a cooperation scheme among different authorities. We show the feasibility and the fulfillment of the proposed reporting service in 5G-enabled vehicular networks in terms of security, privacy, and efficiency.

Secure and Privacy-Aware Cloud-Assisted Video Reporting Service in 5G-Enabled Vehicular Networks

In the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), due to the high mobility of vehicles, the network parameters change frequently and the information that the sender maintains may outdate when it wants to transmit data packet to the receiver, so for improving the routing efficiency and reliability, we propose the probability prediction-based reliable and efficient opportunistic routing (PRO) algorithm for VANETs. The PRO routing algorithm can predict the variation of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and packet queue length (PQL) of the receiver. The prediction results are used to determine the utility of each relaying vehicle in the candidate set. The calculation of the vehicle’s utility is the weight-based algorithm, and the weights are the variances of SINR and PQL. The relaying priority of each relaying vehicle is determined by the value of its utility. By these innovations, the PRO can achieve better routing performance (such as the packet delivery ratio, the end-to-end delay, and the network throughput) than the SRPE, ExOR (street-centric), and greedy perimeter stateless routing algorithms.

Probability Prediction-Based Reliable and Efficient Opportunistic Routing Algorithm for VANETs

In vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), communication links break more frequently due to the high-speed vehicles. In this paper, a novel cluster-based VANET oriented evolving graph (CVoEG) model is proposed by extending the existing VoEG model to improve the reliability of vehicular communications. Here, the link reliability is used as a criterion for cluster members (CMs) and cluster heads (CHs) selection. The proposed CVoEG model divides VANET nodes (vehicles) into an optimal number of clusters (ONC) by using Eigen gap heuristic. In a given cluster, a vehicle will be selected as a CH, if it has a maximum Eigen-centrality score. Based on the CVoEG model, a reliable routing scheme called CEG-RAODV is proposed to find the most reliable journey (MRJ) from source to destination. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the existing schemes in terms of reliability, reliable routing request (RRR), packet delivery ratio (PDR), end to end (E2E) delay, and throughput.

An Unsupervised Cluster-Based VANET-Oriented Evolving Graph (CVoEG) Model and Associated Reliable Routing Scheme

In a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), high mobility and uneven distribution of vehicles are important factors affecting the performance of routing protocols. The high mobility may cause frequent changes of network topology, whereas the uneven distribution of vehicles may lead to routing failures due to network partition; even high density of vehicles may cause severe wireless channel contentions in an urban environment. In this paper, we propose a novel concept called the microtopology (MT), which consists of vehicles and wireless links among vehicles along a street as a basic component of routing paths and even the entire network topology. We abstract the MT model reflecting the dynamic routing-related characteristics in practical urban scenarios along streets, including the effect of mobility of vehicles, signal fading, wireless channel contention, and existing data traffic. We first analyze the endside-to-endside routing performance in an MT as a basis of routing decision. Then, we propose a novel street-centric routing protocol based on MT (SRPMT) along the streets for VANETs. Simulation results show that our proposed SRPMT protocol achieves higher data delivery rate and shorter average end-to-end delay compared with the performance of greedy perimeter stateless routing (GPSR) and greedy traffic-aware routing (GyTAR).

A Street-Centric Routing Protocol Based on Microtopology in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

4 Abstract: Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are a special form of wireless networks made by vehicles communicating among themselves on roads which includes communications among vehicles and between vehicles and road side units. However, due to the high mobility and the frequent changes of the network topology, the communication links are highly vulnerable to disconnection in VANETs. This paper extend the well-known ad hoc on- demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol with evolving graph theory to propose reliable routing protocol EG- RAODV. Simulation results demonstrate that EG-RAODV significantly outperforms better packet delivery ratio, lowest routing request ratio, less link failures while maintaining a reasonable routing control overhead and lowest average end to end delay.
