Formulation of essential oil-loaded chitosan–alginate nanocapsules

A comparative study on the biosorption of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) using Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) was investigated under various physicochemical parameters. Optimisation studies were carried out using batch biosorption studies. The biosorption of each of the metal ions was found to be pH-dependent. Kinetic study showed that each biosorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The sorption of each metal ion was analysed with Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models, in each case, the equilibrium data were best represented by Freundlich isotherm model. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard Gibbs free energy (∆G˚), standard enthalpy (∆H˚), standard entropy (∆S˚) and the activation energy (A) were calculated. The biosorption of each metal ion was spontaneous and the order of spontaneity of the biosorption process being Zn(II) > Cd(II) > Pb(II). Similarly, the change in entropy shows that the order of disorder is Cd(II) > Zn(II) > Pb(II). In each case, the value of activation energy obtained shows that each process is a diffusion-controlled adsorption process.

The use of herbal preparations remained the main approach of folk medicine to the treatment of ailments and debilitating diseases. Initial intensive researches conducted on Lemongrass extracts (tea) may have showed conflicting evidences, however the resurgence in claims of folk medicine practitioners necessitated further inquiry into the efficacy of the tea. Lemongrass tea contains several biocompounds in its decoction, infusion and essential oil extracts. Anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-obesity, antinociceptive, anxiolytic and antihypertensive evidences of lemongrass tea were clearly elucidated to support initial pharmacological claims. Lemongrass tea was non-toxic, non-mutagenic and receives wide acceptance among alternative medicine practitioners in several developing countries. This review therefore presents previous research activities, technologies and information surrounding bioactivities of lemongrass tea. Areas of future researches which may elucidate mechanisms of the biological properties of lemongrass extracts were highlighted.

Biological properties of lemongrass: An overview

Cymbopogon citratus, Stapf (Lemon grass) is a widely used herb in tropical countries, especially in Southeast Asia. The essential oil of the plant is used in aromatherapy. The compounds identified in Cymbopogon citratus are mainly terpenes, alcohols, ketones, aldehyde and esters. Some of the reported phytoconstituents are essential oils that contain Citral α, Citral β, Nerol Geraniol, Citronellal, Terpinolene, Geranyl acetate, Myrecene and Terpinol Methylheptenone. The plant also contains reported phytoconstituents such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which consist of luteolin, isoorientin 2'-O-rhamnoside, quercetin, kaempferol and apiginin. Studies indicate that Cymbopogon citratus possesses various pharmacological activities such as anti-amoebic, antibacterial, antidiarrheal, antifilarial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Various other effects like antimalarial, antimutagenicity, antimycobacterial, antioxidants, hypoglycemic and neurobehaviorial have also been studied. These results are very encouraging and indicate that this herb should be studied more extensively to confirm these results and reveal other potential therapeutic effects.

Scientific basis for the therapeutic use of Cymbopogon citratus, stapf (Lemon grass)

Haematological and biochemical parameter were studied in rabbits exposed to cadmium oxide (CdO) in silica and with concurrent Candida albicans (C. albicans) infection. Suitable controls were maintained. Anaemia characterized by low haemoglobulin (Hb) and packed cell volume (PCV) were consistent observations in CdO exposed animals though this was more severe in animals infected with C. albicans only. Lymphocytosis was also a feature in these animals. Hyperproteinaemia and hypoalbuminemia were observed in CdO exposed and CdO with C. albicans infected animals, whereas the animals infected with C. albicans only exhibited hypoproteinaemia and albuminemia. Serum urea and ALT were also elevated with maximum elevation in Candida infected animals. Creatinine and AST levels were uniformly elevated in the treated groups. After 90 days of CdO exposure highest levels of Cd was found in kidney followed by liver, lung and skeletal muscle.
