E-bike sharing is considered a new mode of transport that is rapidly developing in China. In order to better understand the factors affecting the intention to use e-bike sharing, this study is based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and the technology acceptance model (TAM) and added the variable of policy support. A sample of 441 respondents in a small city in China was collected to analyze residents’ intention on e-bike sharing usage. The results show that the research model can explain well residents’ intention to use shared e-bikes. Perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control have direct positive effects on the intention to use shared e-bikes. Among them, the perceived ease of use has the greatest impact on the intention to use shared e-bikes. Moreover, policy support has an indirect positive influence on the intention to use shared e-bikes through partial mediation of attitude and subjective norms. Finally, some strategies to promote e-bike sharing are proposed. This study can provide a better understanding of the acceptance of e-bike sharing and the strategy for promoting e-bike sharing in urban transportation.

The Factors Influencing Resident’s Intentions on E-Bike Sharing Usage in China

The electric bicycle-sharing system (EBSS) is the fourth-generation urban shared bicycle travel system, which effectively improves the travel efficiency of urban residents and solve the problem of urban congestion. This study attempts to use an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) method to study the acceptance of EBSSs. We had introduced four potential variables, including perceived pleasure (PP), perceived environmental value (PEV), perceived cost (PC), and perceived reliability (PR), into the classic TAM to form a new EBSS-TAM. Data were obtained by using a Likert scale questionnaire from 399 citizens in China. Partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with reflective constructs was employed as the analysis method. The results showed that: (1) the EBSS-TAM can explain user behaviors regarding the use of EBSSs. PP has a positive impact on behavior attitude (BA) while having no impact on behavior intention (BI). PEV has no impact on BA and BI. PC has a negative impact on BA and has no impact on BI. PR has a positive impact on BA while having no impact on BI. Perceived ease of use (PEU) has a positive impact on PP and PEV. (2) Younger users (under 35 years old) are more likely to change from liking CBSSs to using EBSSs than older users are. Male users are more satisfied with EBSSs because of their ease of use. The users who never used CBSSs are more likely to perceive the environmental protection value of EBSSs. Some managerial implications were proposed for the EBSSs.

Exploring Use Acceptance of Electric Bicycle-Sharing Systems: An Empirical Study Based on PLS-SEM Analysis

Whereas most shared mobility providers offer one type of shared electric or conventional vehicle, electric mobility hubs, or eHUBs, offer users access to a range of modes in publicly accessible locations. An apparent strength of eHUBs lies in their appeal to different user groups that may have vastly different mobility needs. However, to date, there is little evidence to support this claim. Consequently, based on a questionnaire sampling>2,500 potential eHUB users across five European countries, several of the factors that may influence the likely adoption of eHUBs were investigated using a multiple linear regression approach. In particular, factors such as respondents’ demographic characteristics, travel behaviour, and attitudes based on Diffusion of Innovation Theory and the Theory of Planned Behaviour, were considered as predictors of the intention to use either shared e-bikes, e-cargobikes, e-cars, and/or e-scooters. This analysis revealed that the intention to use different types of vehicles is indeed predicted by different combinations of factors, with holding a positive attitude towards shared mobility emerging as the strongest predictor across the board. Beyond attitudes, younger respondents, as well as regular cyclists and public transport users, expressed a greater interest in using all modes, except e-cars. Finally, current car drivers positively anticipate using shared electric cars. Taken together, our results suggest that the different shared electric modes offered by an eHUB may indeed appeal to different audiences, strengthening the case for shared mobility providers to diversify their fleets. However, the potential to replace trips by private car appears limited.

Something for every one? - An investigation of people’s intention to use different types of shared electric vehicle

Understanding the factors that affect the uptake of emerging transport modes is critical for understanding if and how they will be used once they are implemented. In this study, we undertook a stated-preference analysis to understand the factors that affect the use of shared autonomous vehicles and shared personal mobility (micromobility) as competing modes on a university campus in Korea. We applied a binary logit model, which included time and cost variables as well as the perceptions of convenience (in-car congestion and availability) and safety. For autonomous vehicles, the cost- and time-related demand elasticities were estimated to be −0.45 and −0.25, respectively, while the cost elasticity for shared electric bicycles was −0.42. The elasticities of perceived convenience (availability) and safety for the shared electric bicycle system were estimated to be 0.72 and 0.29, respectively. Finally, the elasticity for perceived convenience (in-car congestion) of the shared autonomous vehicle was 0.42. Our results show that there is an innate preference for shared autonomous vehicles when these are compared to shared personal mobility, and that the effect of subjective variables (convenience and safety) on the use of emerging transport modes is as important as traditional cost and time variables.

Shared Autonomous Vehicles Competing with Shared Electric Bicycles: A Stated-Preference Analysis

As an important component of bike-sharing (BS) users, the travel behavior of college students and office workers is important to the promotion of BS within Chinese cities. To explore the influencing factors for the behavioral intentions of BS, this paper makes a different analysis between the two groups. Based on the theory of planned behavior, and using environmental awareness as an extended variable, a BS travel intention model was developed. A total of 676 valid questionnaires were collected and analyzed from college students and office workers in Zhengzhou. The results indicate that attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavior control, and environmental awareness have a positive impact on the behavioral intentions of BS. However, the influence degree of each variable is different between the two groups. Perceived behavior control, including travel time, travel cost, and cycling difficulty, has the greatest impact on BS behavioral intention for college students. Meanwhile, subjective norms, including policy and media publicity, has the most significant impact on BS behavioral intention for office workers. The impact of environmental awareness on college students’ use of BS is higher than that of office workers. We also found that undergraduates use BS more frequently than postgraduates. The findings provide the clear influence factors on behavioral intentions of BS between college students and office workers, that can help policy optimization in terms of bike-sharing systems, giving some suggestion for an approach devoted to deepen the individual-context interactions.

A Comparison in Travel Characteristics of Bike-Sharing between College Students and Office Workers Based on Theory of Planned Behavior

In China, shared electric bicycles are developing rapidly, and are widely used by residents. Understanding the factors that affect residents’ intention to use shared electric bicycles is important for implementing a policy of developing sustainable transportation. A sample of 751 respondents has been collected in a small-sized Chinese city to analyze residents’ intention to use shared electric bicycles, using an extended theory of planned behavior model. The findings reveal that the research model can well explain residents’ intention to use shared electric bicycles. Attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control have direct positive effects on the intention to use shared electric bicycles. Among them, the subjective norm has the greatest impact on the intention to use shared electric bicycles. Environmental concern and policy support have indirect positive effects on the intention to use shared electric bicycles through the partial mediation of attitude and subjective norm. Based on the above analysis, some measures are proposed to guide the development of shared electric bicycles.
