Cyber-Resilient Smart Cities: Detection of Malicious Attacks in Smart Grids

The integration of improved control techniques with advanced information technologies enables the rapid development of smart grids. The necessity of having an efficient, reliable, and flexible communication infrastructure is achieved by enabling real-time data exchange between numerous intelligent and traditional electrical grid elements. The performance and efficiency of the power grid are enhanced with the incorporation of communication networks, intelligent automation, advanced sensors, and information technologies. Although smart grid technologies bring about valuable economic, social, and environmental benefits, testing the combination of heterogeneous and co-existing Cyber-Physical-Smart Grids (CP-SGs) with conventional technologies presents many challenges. The examination for both hardware and software components of the Smart Grid (SG) system is essential prior to the deployment in real-time systems. This can take place by developing a prototype to mimic the real operational circumstances with adequate configurations and precision. Therefore, it is essential to summarize state-of-the-art technologies of industrial control system testbeds and evaluate new technologies and vulnerabilities with the motivation of stimulating discoveries and designs. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the advancement of CP-SGs with their corresponding testbeds including diverse testing paradigms has been performed. In particular, we broadly discuss CP-SG testbed architectures along with the associated functions and main vulnerabilities. The testbed requirements, constraints, and applications are also discussed. Finally, the trends and future research directions are highlighted and specified.

There has been a progressive development in the synthesis of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in power networks recently. ICT systems have become a vital part of every aspect of our daily lives and its integration into the electric power system has become paramount. ICTs support efficient incorporation of activities of all stakeholders of the power system to certify a more cost-effective and sustainable power system. The power system will exhibit intelligent monitoring and control, bidirectional communication between stakeholders and power system elements, security and safety of supply and self-healing qualities. However, asides from the vast benefits ICTs, their implementation within the power network come with some drawbacks which include element failures, failures due to interdependencies as well as vulnerabilities to cyber-attacks. These drawbacks can impact the reliability of the power network negatively. The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of ICTs integration on the reliability of power networks in terms of empirical validation of standard reliability indices. This study groups the findings into four perspectives, including the effects of cyber power interdependencies, ICT infrastructure failures, cyber-attacks and environmental conditions. As expected, results show that failures and maloperations in the ICT network have adverse effects on system reliability and careful considerations need to be made to dampen these shortcomings.

Impact of the Integration of Information and Communication Technology on Power System Reliability: A Review

The integration of smart infrastructures that facilitate two-way communication via information and communication technology (ICT) has enhanced the efficiency and sustainability of the power network. However, technologies, such as dynamic thermal rating (DTR) systems and system integrity protection schemes (SIPS), have disadvantages, including infrastructure failures, cyber–physical interdependencies, and cyber intrusions. These disadvantages contribute to the reduced reliability of the network. Comprehensive exploration of the reliability impacts of multiple smart grid technologies on a single power network has not been conducted. A DTR and SIPS system integrating wide area monitoring functions using phasor measurement units (PMUs) is presented in this study, and the effect of ICT contingencies on network reliability is investigated. A Monte Carlo simulation approach and a scenario reduction technique are utilized in this article. This approach is evaluated on the IEEE-RTS to demonstrate the advantages of ICTs. The approach is suitable for different network topologies, in which the difference lies in the number of required PMUs. Results demonstrate that a reliable SIPS can minimize the aging process while slightly influencing load curtailment despite the increase in overall network aging due to DTR. PMU functional failures result in load loss due to loss of observability despite their high availability.
