Luminescence properties of Sm3+ doped Na2B4O7 glasses for lighting application

Ce 3 + –doped BaO-Gd 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses with high density have been prepared by melt quenching method and the infrared transmission, UV–vis transmission, excitation, emission spectra and luminescence lifetime have been measured. The infrared transmission spectra confirm there are [BO 3 ] and [BO 4 ] units for the borosilicate glasses. A broad absorption band is observed and the UV absorption edge shifts to a longer wavelength with the increase of SiO 2 /B 2 O 3 ratio and Ce 2 O 3 content. It exhibits an intense blue emission peaking around 404 nm which ascribes to 5d–4f electronic transition of Ce 3 + ion under UV excitation. The emission intensity decreases and the emission maximum of Ce 3 + ion shifts to longer wavelength with the increasing SiO 2 /B 2 O 3 ratio and Ce 2 O 3 content. The luminescence lifetime of Ce 3 + ion in the borosilicate glasses is in an order of ns, which indicates the potential applications of Ce 3 + –doped BaO-Gd 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses in radiation detection.

Spectroscopic properties of Ce 3 + -doped BaO-Gd 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses

Fluoride phosphate (FP) glass fibres have been developed for radiation dosimetry based on the mechanism of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). Doping with Tb3+ ions improved the materials sensitivity; for samples melted in oxidising conditions, OSL intensity was increased from 8.8 × 105 cnts/g/Gy for undoped glass to 812.3 × 105 cnts/g/Gy for Tb3+-doped glass. The radiation sensor performance of Tb3+-doped glass fibres under both beta and X-ray irradiation demonstrated the capability of the fibres for radiation dosimetry applications.
