Sulfur-containing, oil-soluble compositions which are useful as lubricating oil additives, particularly in lubricants containing little or no phosphorus. In one embodiment, the compositions of the invention comprise (A) at least one metal salt of at least one dithiocarbamic acid of the formula: R1(R2)N-CSSH, wherein R1 and R2 are each independently hydrocarbyl groups in which the total number of carbon atoms in R1 and R2 is sufficient to render the metal salt oil-soluble, (B) at least one oil-soluble sulfurized organic compound, and (C) at least one auxiliary corrosion-inhibitor. In other embodiments, the compositions also contain (D) at least one detergent/dispersant. Lubricating oil compositions containing the compositions of the invention exhibit improved oxidation-corrosion-inhibiting properties, anti-wear properties, and/or extreme pressure properties. Such lubricating compositions containing less than about 0.1% by weight of phosphorus also exhibit good compatibility with nitrile seals.

An antiwear additive has an alkali metal borate; and a thiadiazole compound. That thiadiazole compound may be a 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, a 2-alkylpolythio-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, or a 2-alkylestermercapto-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole. If the thiadiazole compound is a 2-alkylpolythio-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole or a 2-alkylestermercapto-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, the alkyl group has from one to twenty carbon atoms. If the thiadiazole compound is a 2-alkylpolythio-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, the polythio group has from two to eight sulfur atoms. This antiwear additive can be used with a base grease in a grease composition.

Techniques are described for rendering silver and copper surfaces of various articles resistant to corrosion. The surfaces are contacted with compounds selected from the group consisting of 2-mercaptobenzoxazole and 1-phenyl-1H-tetrazole-5-thiol. Abrasion-resistant coatings are preferably applied to the silver and copper surfaces. The corrosion inhibiting compound may be included in the abrasion-resistant coating.

3-Halo-1,2,4-thiadiazolyl 5-disulfides and 1,2,4-thiadiazolyl 3,5-bis(disulfides) are prepared by reaction of mercaptans with the corresponding sulfenyl chlorides. The disulfides are useful as corrosion inhibitors in lubricants.

ILLUSTRATIVE OF 2-HYDROCARBYLDITHIO-5-MERCAPTO-1,3,4-THIADIAZOLES ARE THOSE HAVING AS THE HYDROCARBYL SUBSTITUENT ALKYL, CYCLOALKYL, ALKARYL AND ARALKYL GROUPS.
