NeXt generation/dynamic spectrum access/cognitive radio wireless networks: a survey

With the rapid deployment of new wireless devices and applications, the last decade has witnessed a growing demand for wireless radio spectrum. However, the fixed spectrum assignment policy becomes a bottleneck for more efficient spectrum utilization, under which a great portion of the licensed spectrum is severely under-utilized. The inefficient usage of the limited spectrum resources urges the spectrum regulatory bodies to review their policy and start to seek for innovative communication technology that can exploit the wireless spectrum in a more intelligent and flexible way. The concept of cognitive radio is proposed to address the issue of spectrum efficiency and has been receiving an increasing attention in recent years, since it equips wireless users the capability to optimally adapt their operating parameters according to the interactions with the surrounding radio environment. There have been many significant developments in the past few years on cognitive radios. This paper surveys recent advances in research related to cognitive radios. The fundamentals of cognitive radio technology, architecture of a cognitive radio network and its applications are first introduced. The existing works in spectrum sensing are reviewed, and important issues in dynamic spectrum allocation and sharing are investigated in detail.

Advances in cognitive radio networks: A survey

Dynamic spectrum access stands as a promising and spectrum-efficient communication approach for resource-constrained multihop wireless sensor networks due to their event-driven communication nature, which generally yields bursty traffic depending on the event characteristics. In addition, opportunistic spectrum access may also help realize the deployment of multiple overlaid sensor networks, and eliminate collision and excessive contention delay incurred by dense node deployment. Incorporating cognitive radio capability in sensor networks yields a new sensor networking paradigm (i.e., cognitive radio sensor networks). In this article the main design principles, potential advantages, application areas, and network architectures of CRSNs are introduced. The existing communication protocols and algorithms devised for cognitive radio networks and WSNs are discussed along with the open research avenues for the realization of CRSNs.

Cognitive radio sensor networks

The new paradigm of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) networks aims to provide opportunistic access to large parts of the underutilized spectrum. The majority of research in this area has focused on free-for-all, uncoordinated access methods common in ad-hoc military applications (Horne, W. 2003; Leaves, P. et al., 2002; Lehr, W. et al., 2002; Schafer, D.J.; To/spl uml/njes, R., 2002). We argue that a simpler pragmatic approach that offers coordinated, spatially aggregated spectrum access via a regional spectrum broker is more attractive in the immediate future. We first introduce two new concepts, coordinated access band (CAB) and statistically multiplexed access (SMA), to the spectrum. We describe their implementation in the new DIMSUMnet (dynamic intelligent management of spectrum for ubiquitous mobile-access network) architecture consisting of four elements: base stations; clients; a radio access network manager (RAN-MAN) that obtains spectrum leases; a per-domain spectrum broker that controls spectrum access. We also discuss in detail various issues in the design of spectrum brokers and spectrum allocation policies and algorithms.

DIMSUMnet: new directions in wireless networking using coordinated dynamic spectrum

Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) are composed of cognitive, spectrum-agile devices capable of changing their configurations on the fly based on the spectral environment. This capability opens up the possibility of designing flexible and dynamic spectrum access strategies with the purpose of opportunistically reusing portions of the spectrum temporarily vacated by licensed primary users. On the other hand, the flexibility in the spectrum access phase comes with an increased complexity in the design of communication protocols at different layers. This work focuses on the problem of designing effective routing solutions for multi-hop CRNs, which is a focal issue to fully unleash the potentials of the cognitive networking paradigm. We provide an extensive overview of the research in the field of routing for CRNs, clearly differentiating two main categories: approaches based on a full spectrum knowledge, and approaches that consider only local spectrum knowledge obtained via distributed procedures and protocols. In each category we describe and comment on proposed design methodologies, routing metrics and practical implementation issues. Finally, possible future research directions are also proposed.

Routing in cognitive radio networks: Challenges and solutions

This paper studies a fundamental problem in dynamic spectrum access (DSA) networks: given a set of detected spectrum bands that can be temporarily used by each node in a DSA network, how to form a topology by selecting spectrum bands for each radio interface of each node, called topology formation in this paper. We propose a novel layered graph to model the temporarily available spectrum bands, called spectrum opportunities (SOPs) in this paper, and use this layered graph model to develop effective and efficient routing and interface assignment algorithms to form near-optimal topologies for DSA networks. We have evaluated the performance of our layered graph approach and compared it to a sequential interface assignment algorithm. The numerical results show that the layered graph approach significantly outperforms the sequential interface assignment
