This study focuses on the roles teachers undertake to promote literacy in a kindergarten classroom. Five early childhood teachers and their children participated in this study. Data were collected through systematic videotaped observations during the children's play periods. Inductive content analysis was the method used to analyze the data. The results identify, define, and describe the teachers' roles that they assumed in promoting the children's literacy development in the context of children's play. Teacher roles supporting literacy learning in children's play were identified, defined, and described as discussion leader, storyteller, examiner, instructional guide, informer, learning center monitor and decision-maker.

Teachers' Roles in Promoting Literacy in the Context of Play

The purpose of this study was to provide teachers with a literacy in- tervention method and to assess the roles teachers of Spanish-speaking kin- dergarten students assume in the context of literacy-related play and how these roles promote the students' literacy development. Data were analyzed through inductive content analysis, which iden- tified roles teachers assumed during literacy-related play of kindergarten Spanish-speaking students. Resumen: Los propositos de este estudio fueron: proporcionar una metodo- logia de intervencion literaria a maestros, revisar los papeles que juegan los maestros de estudiantes de kindergarten que hablan Espanol en un contexto de juego literario, y senalar como estos roles promueven el desarrollo literario de los estudiantes. Las fuentes de informacion consistieron en observaciones sistematicas video-grabadas de la interaccion del maestro durante el juego literario del alumno. La informacion se analizo a traves de analisis de con- tenido inductivo, el cual identifico los roles que los maestros asumieron du- rante el juego literario de los estudiantes de kindergarten de habla Hispana.

The purpose of this study was to describe the procedures used for constructing the early childhood teacher`s role rating scale. The procedures for constructing the instrument, the Early Childhood Teacher`s Role Rating Scale (ECTRRS), consisted of : (1) designing the instrument (selecting the type of instrument, conducting the interviews and identifying items); (2) piloting and refining the instrument; (3) administering the refined instrument; (4) examining the instrument`s validity; (5) estimating the instrument`s reliability; (6) analyzing the items for discriminating performance level. The final scale consists of 73 items in 5 subareas of roles: role as the curriculum designer (16 items); role as the performer of instruction (14 items); role as the counselor/advisor (9 items); role as the researcher (15 items); role as the manager of administrative affairs (19 items).
