Digital Twin in manufacturing: A categorical literature review and classification

One of the most significant advances in the development of computer science, information and communication technologies is represented by the cyber-physical systems (CPS). They are systems of collaborating computational entities which are in intensive connection with the surrounding physical world and its on-going processes, providing and using, at the same time, data-accessing and data-processing services available on the Internet. Cyber-physical production systems (CPPS), relying on the latest, and the foreseeable further developments of computer science, information and communication technologies on one hand, and of manufacturing science and technology, on the other, may lead to the 4th industrial revolution, frequently noted as Industrie 4.0. The paper underlines that there are significant roots in general – and in particular to the CIRP community – which point towards CPPS. Expectations towards research in and implementation of CPS and CPPS are outlined and some case studies are introduced. Related new R&D challenges are highlighted.

Introduction to Fuzzy Logic using MATLAB

The aim of an ongoing research project carried out by six European research and educational institutions is to establish a Virtual Institute for the Modelling of Industrial Manufacturing Systems (VIMIMS). The VIMIMS virtual institute has been designed to become an international platform for teaching and research in the field of analysis, design and performance evaluation of industrial manufacturing systems. VIMIMS is implemented as an internetbased portal that offers students and researchers from around the globe opportunities to study, teach, research and communicate. This paper aims to describe the architecture of the VIMIMS web portal and its utilisation by users from a real educational institute. This platform will be integrated into courses of project partners and will act as a supplement to ordinary 'face-to-face' lectures and practical activities.

Integration of on-line and face-to-face learning at an international platform for teaching and research

The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more important in the area of production and manufacturing. While experiencing the rapid changes in the Industry 4.0 era, companies are striving to remain competitive by exploiting the potential of digitization. In the road towards Industry 4.0, companies have to evaluate their capabilities and determine goals for the future: these are supported by maturity assessment models, such as the Company CoMpaSs (CCMS) model. As technologies evolve, these models have to be improved as well: the aim of the paper is to update the CCMS model with AI aspects that were not detailed enough previously. In the paper, the authors first perform a literature review on the topic of application of AI in the production area, and also interview experts from the industry and academia in order to create a basis for the AI aspect in the CCMS model. Second, the model is extended with one additional dimension called AI applications, based on the above-mentioned results and taking the pathways and development levels determined in the Connected Factories project into consideration.
