The assessment of geodiversity can be made with qualitative, quantitative and qualitative–quantitative methods. Qualitative methods have a descriptive character and are suitable for nominal and ordinal data. Quantitative methods are based on a set of parameters and indicators to determine a geodiversity index of a certain area. Qualitative–quantitative methods result in a combination of quantitative (i.e., digital) and cause-effect data (i.e., relational and explanatory). At the current stage of development, qualitative–quantitative methods are the most advanced and the ones offering more reliable results. Their main advantage is the integration of data from different sources and with different content and their wide use within geographic information systems, both at the stage of data collection and data integration, as well as during numerical processing and output presentation. The limitation of these methods is related to difficulties concerning the validation of results. The development of qualitative–quantitative methods associated with cognitive issues should be expected in the near future, oriented towards ontology and the Semantic Web.

Methods for Assessing Geodiversity

Phytoremediation is a green emerging technology used to remove pollutants from environment components. Mechanisms used to remediate soils contaminated by heavy metal are: phytoextraction, phytostabilisation, phytovolatilization and rhizofiltration. The two first mechanisms are the most reliable. Many factors influence the choice of the suitable phytoremediation strategy for soil decontamination. It depends on soil properties, heavy metal levels and characteristics, plant species and climatic conditions. The present review discusses factors affecting heavy metals uptake by plant species, the different phytoremediation strategies of heavy metal contaminated soils and the advantages and disadvantages of phytoremediation and each of its mechanisms.

Phytoremediation Mechanisms of Heavy Metal Contaminated Soils: A Review

The soil and subsoil of Morocco are rich in geological phenomena that bear the imprint of a history which goes back in time more than 2000 million years. Very many geologically remarkable sites exposed in accessible outcrops, with good quality remained unknown to the general public and therefore deserved to be vulgarized. It is a memory to acquaint the present generations but also to preserve for future generations. In total, a rich geological heritage in many ways: Varied landscapes, international stratotypes, various geological structures, varied rocks, mineral associations, a huge procession offossiles, remnants of oceanic crust (ophiolites) among oldests ones in the world (800 my), etc. For this geological heritage, an approach of an overall inventory is needed, both regionally and nationally, taking into account all the skills of the earth sciences. This will put the item on the natural (geological) potentialities as a lever for sustainable regional development. For this, it is necessary to implement a strategy of “geoconservation” for the preservation and assessment of the geological heritage. A website “lithotheque du Maroc” is under construction.

Geodiversity Examples of Morocco: From Inventory to Regional Geotourism Development

The High Moulouya is a region where mining industry has been developed at the beginning of the 20th century. Residues generated from past mining activities have been dumped over the years as tailing ponds. The goal of this research was to determine the concentrations of three metal trace elements (MTE) in the tailings, in two plant species (Stipa tenacissima and Artemisia herba-alba) and soils surrounding these deposits. Lead, copper, and zinc have been specifically considered. Chemical analyses have been achieved using ICP-AES. Results showed significant concentration of Pb in mining residues and vegetation that colonize the surrounding area. Concentrations of the three heavy metals in soil and plant samples were minimal at 1 km from the piles of tailings. The maximum accumulation of metals within the 50-200 m zone suggests that the surrounding vegetation forms a wind erosion obstacle resulting in metal dust deposition
