There have been review on kenaf fibre (KF) production and mechanical properties but lacks review on the treatment and surface modification on kenaf fibre. Therefore, this study is to show the type of treatment that have been done by previous researcher. A lot of methods have been investigated to find the optimum method to obtain better condition and properties for kenaf fibre. The present review describes those applied to kenaf fibre. The most widely used chemical treatment is the alkaline treatment using a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, followed by a silane treatment. Variety of chemical concentration for NaOH solution and silane solution are investigated and a few combined treatments such as alkaline-silane, alkaline-steam, alkaline-radiation and alkaline-bleaching are also discussed. Thus, this paper presents an overview of investigated treatment methods with application to kenaf fibre and what are the effects of chemical treatment to the surface of kenaf fibre and the mechanical properties of the composites developed based on treated kenaf fibre.

Effects of fibre treatment on mechanical properties of kenaf fibre reinforced composites: a review

Based on the first order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT) in the present studie, static and dynamic behavior of carbon nanotube-reinforced composite sandwich plates has been analysed. Two types of sandwich plates, namely, the sandwich with face sheet reinforced and homogeneous core and the sandwich with homogeneous face sheet and reinforced core are considered. The face sheet or core plates are reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes with two types of distributions of uniaxially aligned reinforcement material which uniformly (UD-CNT) and functionally graded (FG-CNT). The analytical equations are derived and the exact solutions for bending and vibration analyses of such type’s plates are obtained. The mathematical models provided and the present solutions are numerically validated by comparison with some available results in the literature. Inﬂuence of Various parameters of reinforced sandwich plates such as aspect ratios, volume fraction, types of reinforcement and plate thickness on the bending and vibration analyses of carbon nanotube-reinforced composite sandwich plates are studied and discussed. The findings suggest that the (FG-CNT) face sheet reinforced sandwich plate has a high resistance against deflections compared to other types of reinforcement. It is also revealed that the reduction in the dimensionless natural frequency is most pronounced in core reinforced sandwich plate.

Static and Dynamic Behavior of Nanotubes-Reinforced Sandwich Plates Using (FSDT)

This work studies the agglomeration effect of continuously graded single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on the vibration of SWCNTs/fiber/polymer/metal laminates cylindrical shell. The strain-displacement relations are applied according to the Kirchhoff Love's first approximation shell theory, whereas the dimensionless frequencies of the structure are obtained by means of the beam modal function model. Fiber, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), polymer matrix and metal are four phases constituting the agglomerated CNTs/fiber/polymer/metal laminate (CNTFPML) cylindrical shell. In the first step, we introduce the CNTs randomly within the matrix, such that the volume fraction can be assumed to be continuously graded in the thickness direction. We determine the effect of the CNTs agglomeration on the elastic properties of CNT-reinforced composites, by means of the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach here applied on an equivalent fiber. In the second step, the fiber is introduced as reinforcement phase in the CNT-reinforced composite. Finally, the adhesive fiber prepreg is combined with the thin metal layers. Thus, we study the sensitivity of the vibration behavior of the cylindrical shell to the following input parameters, namely: the CNTs agglomeration and distribution, the mass and volume fractions of the fiber, the boundary condition and lay-ups.

Numerical buckling analysis of graded CNT-reinforced composite sandwich shell structure under thermal loading

In this work, the thermal buckling characteristics of zigzag single-walled boron nitride (SWBNNT) embedded in a one-parameter elastic medium modeled as Winkler-type foundation are investigated using a nonlocal first-order shear deformation theory (NFSDT). This model can take into account the small scale effect as well as the transverse shear deformation effects of nanotubes. A closed-form solution for nondimensional critical buckling temperature is obtained in this investigation. Further the effect of nonlocal parameter, Winkler elastic foundation modulus, the ratio of the length to the diameter, the transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia on the critical buckling temperature are being investigated and discussed. The results presented in this paper can provide useful guidance for the study and design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the thermal buckling properties of boron nitride nanotubes.

Thermal buckling analysis of SWBNNT on Winkler foundation by non local FSDT

This work examines vibration and bending response of carbon nanotube-reinforced composite plates resting on the Pasternak elastic foundation. Four types of distributions of uni-axially aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes are considered to reinforce the plates. Analytical solutions determined from mathematical formulation based on hyperbolic shear deformation plate theory are presented in this study. An accuracy of the proposed theory is validated numerically by comparing the obtained results with some available ones in the literature. Various considerable parameters of carbon nanotube volume fraction, spring constant factors, plate thickness and aspect ratios, etc. are considered in the present investigation. According to the numerical examples, it is revealed that the vertical displacement of the plates is found to diminish as the increase of foundation parameters; while, the natural frequency increase as the increment of the parameters for every type of plate.
