An antenna for receiving circularly polarized satellite radio signals has a conductive base surface and at least one a conductor loop oriented horizontally above the base surface by a height h. The conductor loop is configured as a polygonal or circular closed ring line radiator. The ring line radiator forms a resonant structure that is electrically excited so that the current distribution of a running line wave in a single rotation direction occurs on the ring line, wherein the phase difference of which, over one revolution, amounts to essentially 2π. A vertical radiator extends between the conductive base surface and the circumference of the ring line radiator. The height h is smaller than ⅕ of the free-space wavelength λ.

Aerial for the reception of circularly polarised satellite radio signals comprising at least one substantially horizontally oriented conductor loop arranged over a conductive base surface, having an assembly for electromagnetic excitation of the conductor loop connected to an aerial connection. The conductor loop is designed as a loop emitter by a polygonal or circularly closed loop extending in a horizontal plane of height h above the conductive base surface. The loop emitter forms a resonant structure and is electrically excited by the electromagnetic exciter in such a way that on the loop the current distribution of a travelling line wave occurs in one direction of rotation only, of which the phase difference over one revolution is M*2π, where M is an integer and has at least a value of M=2. To facilitate the vertically oriented fractions of the electromagnetic field, there is at least one emitter which extends vertically at the circumference of the loop emitter and to the conductive base surface and which is electromagnetically coupled to both the loop emitter and the electrically conductive base surface. The height h is lower than 1/5 of the free-space wavelength λ.

An electric emitter for vertically polarised wireless signals for a communication service with a narrow frequency bandwidth around a frequency fo with free-space wavelength λo in the gigahertz range, comprising at least one substantially horizontally oriented conductor loop arranged above a conductive base area, with an emitter infeed point for electromagnetic excitation of the loop relative to the base area. The loop is formed by a circularly closed ring conductor running in a substantially horizontal plane with a height h of less than λo/6 over the base area. Distributed over the periphery of the ring conductor are at least three vertical emitters electromagnetically coupled to the ring conductor coupling points and running to the base area, wherein at least two of the emitters are electromagnetically coupled to the base area at earth terminal points, and a vertical emitter is excited via the emitter infeed point at the lower end thereof.

An aerial comprises a conductive, nearly closed, ring 36 from the extremities of which a pair of conductive legs 37, 38 extend at rightangles to its plane to a common connector, such as a ground plane 40. A matching stub 42, extending radially inwards from one extremity of the ring, is connected to the inner conductor 45 of a coaxial cable 46, the outer conductor 49 of which is connected to the ground plane 40, and a radio set 50 is connected, to the aerial through the said cable. Insulating support posts 41 may be provided for the ring 36 and a tuning or loading capacitor 43 may be connected to it at the point on its perimeter farthest from the legs 37, 38. It is stated that the combined lengths of the legs and the ring should preferably be from 0A25# to 0A5# (#= optimum wavelength), that the aerial gives vertically polarized radiation, and that it is usuable over a two-to-one frequency range. The ground plate 40 may be constituted by the top of an automobile or other vehicle. In a second embodiment, instead of the matching stub 42, there is provided a coupling collar (51), Fig. 2, located on the ring (36a) at a short distance (j) from one extremity, and the inner conductor of the coaxial cable (46a) is connected thereto. It is stated that with a cable of 50 ohms impedance, (j) is about 0A0007#. In a third embodiment, two concentric coplanar loops (36b), (36c), Fig. 3, are provided, each operating over a different frequency range. Either separate coaxial cables, or a single twocored cable (46b) may be used for feeding the loops, in association with an aerial selection switch at the radio set 50.
