CT scans may not reduce the negative appendectomy rate in children.
Abigail E. Martin,David Vollman,David Vollman,Brent Adler,Brent Adler,Donna A. Caniano,Donna A. Caniano +6 more
TL;DR: Liberal use of CT scans in diagnosing appendicitis in children has not resulted in a decreased negative appendectomy rate, and potentially harmful radiation exposure should prompt pediatric surgeons to reevaluate the role of CT scanning.
Journal ArticleDOI
A retrospective chart review of the features of PTEN hamartoma tumour syndrome in children.
Emily Hansen-Kiss,Sarah Beinkampen,Brent Adler,Thomas W. Frazier,Thomas W. Prior,Steven H. Erdman,Charis Eng,Gail E. Herman +7 more
TL;DR: This is the largest survey of clinical features in children with PTEN pathogenic mutations to date and confirms earlier reports of increased rates of neurodevelopmental disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reducing computed tomography scans for appendicitis by introduction of a standardized and validated ultrasonography report template.
Jason W. Nielsen,Laura A. Boomer,Kelli J. Kurtovic,Eric Lee,Kevin A. Kupzyk,Ryan Mallory,Brent Adler,D. Gregory Bates,Brian D. Kenney +8 more
TL;DR: Implementation of a standardized ultrasound report template based on validated secondary signs of appendicitis nearly eliminated non-diagnostic exams, improved diagnostic accuracy, and resulted in a striking decrease in CT utilization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lateral thoracic expansion for Jeune syndrome: evidence of rib healing and new bone formation.
J. Terrance Davis,Frederick R. Long,Brent Adler,Robert G. Castile,Robert G. Castile,Samuel Weinstein +5 more
TL;DR: This study presents radiologic evidence that rib healing actually occurs, as does periosteal ossification, and creates additional chest wall that is formed of autologous tissue, fully healed, and not ultimately dependent on titanium struts.
Journal ArticleDOI
MRI Utilization and the Associated Use of Sedation and Anesthesia in a Pediatric ACO.
Joshua C. Uffman,Joshua C. Uffman,Dmitry Tumin,Dmitry Tumin,Vidya T. Raman,Vidya T. Raman,Arlyne Thung,Arlyne Thung,Brent Adler,Brent Adler,Joseph D. Tobias,Joseph D. Tobias +11 more
TL;DR: There was an increasing need for anesthesia services to complete MRI examinations in this pediatric population, resulting in increasing cost of MRI examinations and presenting a challenge to ACO cost containment.
