A thermostat for controlling an HVAC system is described, the thermostat having a user interface that is visually pleasing, approachable, and easy to use while also providing ready access to, and intuitive navigation within, a menuing system capable of receiving a variety of different types of user settings and/or control parameters. For some embodiments, the thermostat comprises a housing, a ring-shaped user-interface component configured to track a rotational input motion of a user, a processing system configured to identify a setpoint temperature value based on the tracked rotational input motion, and an electronic display coupled to the processing system. An interactive thermostat menuing system is accessible to the user by an inward pressing of the ring-shaped user interface component. User navigation within the interactive thermostat menuing system is achievable by virtue of respective rotational input motions and inward pressings of the ring-shaped user interface component.

Thermostat user interface

Brushed DC electric motors have a rotor with commutator portions moving into and out of contact with brushes. As each of these contacts end, a back EMF force is induced into a main current supply signal. The number of these periodic forces can be counted and utilized to identify the position of the component being rotated by the DC electric motor. This method is relatively insensitive to environmental changes, and thus more accurate than the existing art.

A user-friendly programmable thermostat is described that includes a circular body having a large central display surrounded by a ring that can be rotated an pressed inward by a user so as to receive user input in a simple elegant fashion. Different colors can be displayed to the user to indicate currently active HVAC functions, and different shades of colors can be displayed to a user to indicate an estimated amount of time and/or energy for reaching a target temperature. The thermostat is wall mountable and is made up of a head unit removeably mounted to a backplate. A locking mechanism can be provided so as to increase security against unauthorized removal of the head unit. The backplate can be adapted to be mounted on a wall so as to be level, for example by including a bubble level on the backplate. One or more vents are preferably located on the sides of the body, such as in a gap beneath the translatably mounted ring, and/or in a gap between the head unit and the backplate. The target temperature for the device can be altered in response to sensing rotation of the rotating ring, and the programmed schedule can be displayed to and altered by the user in response to sensing rotation of the ring and the translational movement of the ring. Historical information such as temperature and cost information can be displayed to a user in response to sensing rotating of the rotating ring. One or more device settings can be displayed to and edited by a user in response to sensing rotating of the rotating member and the translational movement. According to some embodiments, text characters can be entered by the user.

The wireless communications module (32) is configured to wirelessly communicate process-related information with another device. The energy conversion module (38) is coupled to the wireless communications module (32) . The energy conversion module (38) is configured to couple to a thermal source, and to generate electricity from thermal potential energy in the thermal source.

Process device with improved power generation

A system for shifting energy demand from on-peak time windows to off-peak time windows by using hot water heater load shifting, while providing the end user with the level of service (i.e., availability of hot water) according to the user's customary use described by service quality criteria. The shift is accomplished by a controller located at the end user establishment and in communication with a central control server. The controller monitors local water heater upper and/or lower temperature and controls upper and/or lower water heater heating elements in accordance with a demand shift process commanded by the central control server. The controller may determine usage and remaining capacity for reporting back to the central control server. A volumetric capacity and usage determination is disclosed. The control server may select water heaters according to use patterns and/or measured capacity. One embodiment is adapted for use with existing water heaters without disrupting safety features of the existing water heater.

Water heater demand side management system

An improved heater and method of controlling the same is provided. The water heater has the combination of a tank for holding water, a heater for heating the water, a controller having logic to regulate the heater, and first and second sensors. Each of the sensors detects the water temperature at different areas within the water heater. The sensors also provide the controller with signals corresponding to the detected water temperature. In response to these signals, the controller regulates the heater when at least one of the signals of the first and second sensors satisfies at least one predetermined state condition.

A system in accordance with the invention includes a power converter for converting a thermally generated voltage where the power converter includes a low-voltage direct current to direct current voltage converter (DC-DC converter) and a high-efficiency DC-DC converter coupled with the low-voltage DC-DC converter. The system also includes a charge storage circuit coupled with the low-voltage DC-DC converter and the high-efficiency DC-DC converter for storing converted electrical energy and a programmable controller circuit. The programmable controller circuit is coupled with the high-efficiency DC-DC converter, the low-voltage DC-DC converter, and the charge storage circuit such that the controller circuit substantially controls operation of the system when the voltage potential of the converted electrical energy stored by the charge storage circuit is greater than a brown out voltage of the controller.

Method and apparatus for power management

A system in accordance with the invention includes a thermo-electric device that is physically proximate with a thermal energy source, where, in operation, the thermo-electric device generates a voltage potential. The system further includes a power conversion circuit connected with the thermo-electric device, to modify the generated voltage potential. Also included in the system is a controller circuit connected with the power conversion circuit, where the thermo-electric device powers the controller circuit via the power conversion circuit. The system additionally includes a valve-control circuit connected with the controller circuit and the power conversion circuit, such that the thermo-electric device powers the valve control circuit, at least in part, via the power conversion circuit. The system also includes one or more sensing devices connected with the controller circuit.

A circuit in accordance with the invention includes a safety switch device coupled with, and between, a thermally activated voltage source and a primary switch. The circuit also includes a safety switch control circuit coupled with the safety switch device and a controller circuit; and a voltage generation circuit for turning on the safety switch device. The voltage generation circuit is coupled with the safety switch control circuit, the controller circuit and the safety switch device, such that the controller circuit substantially controls operation of the voltage generation circuit, the safety switch control circuit, and a primary switch circuit that includes the primary switch.

A direct current to direct current voltage converter (DC-DC converter) in accordance with the invention comprises a transformer coupled with a voltage source and a self-starting oscillator that includes a secondary winding of the transformer, a capacitor; and a first switch coupled to conduct current from the DC source via a primary winding of the transformer. The first switch is a normally closed switch. The DC-DC converter also comprises a second switch coupled to conduct current in a parallel path with the first switch, the second switch being a normally open switch having a lower saturation resistance than the first switch.
