In a process for producing a tetrabromophthalic diester composition, a liquid reaction mixture is prepared comprising tetrabromophthalic anhydride (TBPA), a C 2 to C 6 polyhydric aliphatic alcohol (PAA) and an alkylene oxide (AO) selected from the group consisting of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, said reaction mixture being substantially free of an organic solvent. While agitating the reaction mixture, the temperature of the reaction mixture is raised to at least 50° C. to allow the TBPA to react with the PAA and AO to produce a diester composition. The reaction is terminated when the diester composition has an acid value equal to or less than 0.25 mg KOH/gm of the diester composition.

The invention discloses a tetrabromo-benzene anhydride diol synthesis method comprising the steps that: tetrabromo-benzene anhydride and diethylene glycol are uniformly stirred; a catalyst is added; under the protection of a protective gas, fist heating is carried out, and a reaction is carried out when a reaction temperature is reached; when the reaction is finished, an organic solvent is added for dissolving the reaction material; the temperature is reduced, and epoxypropane is added; secondary heating is carried out, and a maintained-temperature reaction is carried out; after the reaction, hot filtering is carried out; and distillation is carried out for removing the organic solvent, such that the product is obtained. The solvent adopted in the invention can be recovered by distillation and can be recycled, the process is simple, reaction temperature is low, reaction conditions are mild, the reactions are easy to control, production energy consumption is low, no harsh reaction condition is in the steps, industrial production can be easily carried out, product yield is high, product thermal stability is high, product content is high, product quality is good, no three-waste production is caused, and no environment-pollution problem is caused.

Tetrabromo-benzene anhydride diol synthesis method

Provided is a process for preparing a product useful as a flame retardant component comprised of a mixed diacetyl ester formed from tetrabromophthalic anhydride (TBPA), glycol(s), propylene oxide, and acetylating agent. The process comprises (A) reacting TBPA and glycol(s) and producing at an elevated temperature a half-ester formed from tetrabromophthalic anhydride and the glycol(s); (B) reacting half-ester with propylene oxide in the presence of a basic alkali metal salt to isopropoxylate the half-ester and (C) acetylating the isopropylated half-ester. Steps (A), (B), and (C) are performed in a liquid triaryl phosphate ester, preferably isopropylated triphenyl phosphate. Step (A) is also a process of the invention. The basic alkali metal salt used in step (B) can be added in (A) if desired.
