The book was compiled from notes developed during eight years of teaching a graduate course on the subject and was used as a text. Thus it has been student tested. Appendix F contains a number of problems, grouped to be used on a chapter by chapter basis The problems are designed to illustrate practical applications of the text material. The parts of this book of most interest and value to the EMC engineer will be the chapters on Thermal Noise, Antennas, Propagation and Transmission Lines, and  Reflection and Refraction. This is not  to downpade the chapters on Statistics and Its Applications, Signal Processing and Detection, and Some System Characteristics which also contain much potentially useful materials. Additional plus values for the book include a list of 40 references, a table of symbols used throughout the book, and a subject index. Some readers may find the condensed type and close line spacing hard to read. It was apparently set up by typewriter using an elite type face with single line spacing. When reduced down to a 6 by 9 5 inch size page it is too crowded for easy reading. In spite of this shortcoming your reviewer recommends this book as a worthwhile reference in this field of interest.

Signal analysis

In recent years, bistatic synthetic aperture radar (BiSAR) has attracted the attention of many radar researchers. It is well known that the slant range history of BiSAR is the sum of two square-rooted terms, which correspond to the transmitting and receiving slant ranges, respectively. For a point target in the SAR scene, it is quite difficult, if not impossible, to obtain an analytic formula to describe the target echo data in the 2-D frequency domain without any approximation by using the conventional stationary phase method, which makes it very difficult to develop fast-focusing algorithms for BiSAR. In this paper, based on the concept of an instantaneous Doppler wavenumber and by defining a new variable called half quasi-bistatic angle, an analytic formula of the point target response in the spectral domain is developed for BiSAR with parallel trajectory (referred to as parallel BiSAR for simplicity). Relying on a first-order Taylor expansion of the above formula with respect to the parameter called the sum of closest distances on the swath center, a bistatic range migration algorithm is proposed for any azimuth-shift-invariant BiSAR data processing. Simulation results have confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed novel approach.

Focusing Parallel Bistatic SAR Data Using the Analytic Transfer Function in the Wavenumber Domain

In this paper an exact interpolation formula forms the basis for reconstructing computerized tomographic (CT) imagery by direct Fourier methods. Practical variations of exact interpolation are compared with other interpolation methods (i.e., nearest neighbor, etc.) and are shown to yield superior imagery. Images produced by the direct Fourier approach using near-exact interpolation are shown to be equal in quality with those produced by filtered convolution backprojection (FCBP). Moreover, the direct Fourier approach computes an image in O(N2 log N) time versus O(N3) for the FCBP method.

function. Resampling the data to more advantageous sample locations entails interpolation of the data. The radar
engineer often picks a resampling or an interpolation technique that "is handy", or "seems to work", without any
analytical justification for his choice. However, understanding the science and mathematics that underpin interpolation
can avoid unexpected and undesirable side effects from a suboptimal choice. This paper details interpolation kernel
characteristics, allowing intelligent choices for algorithm design, tailored for radar signal processing applications.

Designing interpolation kernels for SAR data resampling

: Spotlight-mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) produces complex Fourier data points on a polar grid which is offset from dc in the frequency domain To produce an image in the spatial domain, it is necessary to invert this sampled Fourier data prior to extracting magnitude information However, the polar format of the data makes this difficult, since there is no known polar FFT An alternative is to interpolate the complex polar data to a Cartesian grid and then perform the two-dimensional FFT The magnitude of the resulting data array represents the magnitude of the complex ground reflectivity of the terrain under illumination The interpolation process can be very computationally intense, with an order two to fifty times that of the FFT Reducing the computation in the interpolation stage, while maintaining reconstruction quality is the focus of this work Several 2D interpolation techniques are examined, including nearest neighbor, bilinear, inverse-distance to the nth power, weighted sinc, chirp z-transform, and the newest interpolation algorithm proposed for this problem - the cubic spline It is found that separable interpolation schemes outperform the more commonly used nearest neighbor and inverse distance algorithms, and that the cubic spline is very competitive the weighted sinc interpolator in computation requirements and reconstruction quality The chirp z-transform is determined to be a good alternative to the classical interpolation-DFT approach
