Improved photocatalytic performance of Gd and Nd co-doped ZnO nanorods for the degradation of methylene blue

A series of La-doped ZnO (La/ZnO) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning-calcination technology and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and specific surface area analysis. The effect of numerous operational parameters involving calcination temperature, La doping amount, La-doped ZnO concentration and initial Rhodamine B (Rh B) concentration on photocatalytic efficiency of the composite has been analyzed by using Rh B for degradation under the illumination of visible light. Under optimum conditions, ZnO doped with 1.5 at.% La achieved 94.31% Rh B degradation after 510 min of visible light illumination. The kinetic date of La/ZnO catalyst for Rh B photodegradation fitted the Langmuir-Hinshelwood first-order (LHFO) kinetic model well.

Enhanced visible light photocatalytic efficiency of La-doped ZnO nanofibers via electrospinning-calcination technology

In view of enhanced bioactivity and photocatalytic applications, the doped material has gained much attention and present study was focused on the preparation of Zn doped WO3 (Zn-d-WO3) via precipitation method. The prepared Zn-d-WO3 was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX). The effect of Zn concentration was studied on antibacterial, antifungal and photocatalytic activities along with structural and morphological variation. The Zn-d-WO3 was triclinic, spherical and rod shaped and particle size was decreased as the Zn concentration increased. The antimicrobial activity of Zn-d-WO3 was evaluated against a panel of bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Pasturellamu ltocida, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and fungal strain (Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium notatum). The Zn-d-WO3 showed promising antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 211-387 (µg/mL), whereas the antifungal activity was less than the standard (Fluconazole), which revealed that the Zn-d-WO3 are highly active against bacterial strains since activity was comparable with standard drug (Rifampicin). The photocatalytic activity (PCA) was evaluated by the degradation methylene blue (MB) dye in an aqueous solution and dye degradation of 78% and 92% was achieved in 120 min under visible and UV irradiation, respectively. Results revealed that the Zn-d-WO3 could possibly be used as photocatalyst for the degradation of dyes in wastewater.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue, Rhodamine B, Methyl Orange and Eriochrome Black T Dyes by Modified Zno Nanocatalysts: A Concise Review

Lanthanum (La)-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized with different La concentrations by employing a gel combustion method using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The as-synthesized photocatalysts were characterized using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy. The average size of ZnO nanoparticles decreased from 34.3 to 10.3 nm with increasing concentrations of La, and the band gap, as evaluated by linear fitting, decreased from 3.10 to 2.78 eV. Additionally, it was found that the photocatalytic activity of doped samples, as investigated by using methyl orange dye under visible lights, improved in response to the increase in La concentration. The decomposition of methyl orange reached 85.86% after 150 min in visible light using La0.1Zn0.9O as the photocatalyst.
