A topical review of numerical and experimental studies of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber is presented over the full range of experimentally reported parameters, from the femtosecond to the continuous-wave regime. Results from numerical simulations are used to discuss the temporal and spectral characteristics of the supercontinuum, and to interpret the physics of the underlying spectral broadening processes. Particular attention is given to the case of supercontinuum generation seeded by femtosecond pulses in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime of photonic crystal fiber, where the processes of soliton fission, stimulated Raman scattering, and dispersive wave generation are reviewed in detail. The corresponding intensity and phase stability properties of the supercontinuum spectra generated under different conditions are also discussed.

The competing role of natural gas and oil as fossil fuel and the non-linear dynamics of resource curse in Russia

This paper concerns with the emerging power system stability issues, classification, and research prospects under a high share of renewables and power electronics. The decades-old traditional power system is undergoing a fast transition with two most prominent features: 1) high-penetration of renewable power generators, utilizing intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar, and 2) high-penetration of power electronic devices in the generation e.g., wind turbine converters and solar power inverters, transmission e.g., flexible ac or dc transmission system converters, and distribution/utilization systems e.g., electric vehicle and microgrid. The development of modern power systems with dual high-penetrations, i.e., high-penetrations of renewables and power electronic devices, influences the power system dynamics significantly and causes new stability issues. This paper first overviews equipment-level features and system-level stability challenges introduced under the dual high-penetration scenario of the modern power system. Next, the impacts of emerging stability challenges on various aspects of the classical stability issues and classifications are highlighted. Under this context, this paper discusses the validity and limitations of the existing classical and extended power system stability classifications proposed by different IEEE/Cigre Working Groups. Furthermore, a new power system stability classification framework is proposed, which not only maintains the inherent logic of the classical classification but also provides wide coverage and future adaptability of the emerging stability issues. Finally, various classification-oriented research prospects in the power system stability domain are highlighted.

Power system stability issues, classifications and research prospects in the context of high-penetration of renewables and power electronics

Over the last two decades, advancements in photovoltaic (PV) technology have been flourishing due to the continuous flow of valuable findings. Relevant insights on recent improvements, manufacturing approaches, and various applications of PV technology are provided. Both the PV cell structure and conversion efficiency may significantly contribute to the progression of the PV system. Currently, a wide range of advanced materials and smart technologies are employed within the PV cell's architecture, improving its structure; i.e. PERC/PERL, IBC, HIT/HJT, and MWT. The applications of nanoparticles and thin film technology in PV cell structures have successfully opened new research prospects to boost PV efficiency and overcome certain limitations with the use of CdSe, ZnCds, CdTe, a-Si/µc-Si, CIS, and CIGS. Additionally, constant development in the third generation of OSC methods using OE, OM, and COP are conducted. The improvement of PV backsheet structures and their enhanced optical properties yielded promising results in optimizing solar radiation, reflectance, and PV cell competence. The emergence of hybrid technologies (e.g. PVTE and TPV systems) led to effective solutions for reducing excessive heat that cause deficiency to a PV cell's functionality. Overall, modelling and effectively implementing appropriate parameters (such as diode parameters, optical parameters, circuit current, circuit voltage, fill factor (FF), conversion efficiency, IR, and UV spectral parameters) contributed to the total efficiency and performance modelling of the PV system.

Challenges of renewable energy penetration on power system flexibility: A survey

As solar power usage is increasing nowadays, performance tests have become one of the most important topics in order to guarantee the security of photovoltaic tools. For photovoltaic panels to become efficient, there is need for health testing of all materials and technologies used in the production of the panels in electrical and optical aspects. Thus, when future energy standards are considered, it is imperative to use solar simulators that obtain near real sunlight spectrum values. The most important components of solar simulators used in photovoltaic panel tests are light sources. In this study, solar simulators were classified based on the light sources they use, and their history and technological development were investigated in line with the literature. Within the scope of this study, carbon arc lamps, sodium vapor lamps, argon arc lamps, quartz-tungsten halogen lamps, mercury xenon lamps, xenon arc, xenon flash lamps, metal halide lamps, LED and super continuum laser light sources were investigated. Additionally, to compare spectral deficiency among these light sources and solar simulators, multiple light sourced solar simulators were also covered under a separate title.

An earthquake is an instantly occurring and unpredictable natural event. The potential and effects of earthquakes and other natural disasters on power systems are system faults. The faults are not only limited to the physical damage of power systems, but power quality disturbances may also take place. The Marmara Earthquake, which occurred in Turkey on Aug 17, 1999, caused death and catastrophe. After the earthquake, the Turkish Power System collapsed. This is the largest power blackout in Turkey in last twenty years. In this study, the impact of the Marmara earthquake on the Turkish power system are described and the Marmara Earthquake Blackout is examined in detail as regards the qualitative behavior of the power system.
