The unique head morphology of sphyrnid sharks might have evolved to enhance electrosensory capabilities. The ‘enhanced electroreception’ hypothesis was tested by comparing the behavioral responses of similarly sized carcharhinid and sphyrnid sharks to prey-simulating electric stimuli. Juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks Sphyrna lewini and sandbar sharks Carcharhinus plumbeus oriented to dipole electric fields from the same maximum distance (approximately 30 cm) and thus demonstrated comparable behavioral-response thresholds (<1 nV cm ‐1 ). Despite the similarity of response threshold, the orientation pathways and behaviors differed for the two species. Scalloped hammerheads typically demonstrated a pivot orientation in which the edge of the cephalofoil closest to the dipole remained stationary while the shark bent its trunk to orient to the center of the dipole. By contrast, sandbars swam in a broader arc towards the center of the dipole. The different orientation patterns are attributed to the hydrodynamic properties of the cephalofoil, which enables the hammerheads to execute sharp turns at high speed. The greater trunk width of the sandbar sharks prevented them from demonstrating the same degree of flexibility. Therefore, although the sphyrnid head morphology does not appear to confer a greater sensitivity to prey-simulating dipole electric fields, it does provide (1) a greater lateral search area, which may increase the probability of prey encounter, and (2) enhanced maneuverability, which may aid in prey capture. Sensory Biology of Elasmobranchs

Passive electroreception is a complex and specialised sense found in a large range of aquatic vertebrates primarily designed for the detection of weak bioelectric fields. Particular attention has traditionally focused on cartilaginous fishes, but a range of teleost and non-teleost fishes from a diversity of habitats have also been examined. As more species are investigated, it has become apparent that the role of electroreception in fishes is not restricted to locating prey, but is utilised in other complex behaviours. This paper presents the various functional roles of passive electroreception in non-electric fishes, by reviewing much of the recent research on the detection of prey in the context of differences in species' habitat (shallow water, deep-sea, freshwater and saltwater). A special case study on the distribution and neural groupings of ampullary organs in the omnihaline bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas, is also presented and reveals that prey-capture, rather than navigation, may be an important determinant of pore distribution. The discrimination between potential predators and conspecifics and the role of bioelectric stimuli in social behaviour is discussed, as is the ability to migrate over short or long distances in order to locate environmentally favourable conditions. The various theories proposed regarding the importance and mediation of geomagnetic orientation by either an electroreceptive and/or a magnetite-based sensory system receives particular attention. The importance of electroreception to many species is emphasised by highlighting what still remains to be investigated, especially with respect to the physical, biochemical and neural properties of the ampullary organs and the signals that give rise to the large range of observed behaviours.

The functional roles of passive electroreception in non-electric fishes

Studies on the brains of teleost fishes have shown that the relative size of sensory brain areas reflects sensory specialisations and the relative importance of a given sensory system. Moreover, the relative size of these brain areas can change in relation to ontogenetic shifts in habitat and feeding ecology. However, although elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) also exhibit ontogenetic shifts in habitat and diet, little is known about how their sensory systems and brains may adapt to these changes. In this paper, we compare the relative volumes of four sensory brain areas; the olfactory bulbs, optic tectum, anterior lateral line lobes and posterior lateral line lobes (that receive input from the olfactory epithelium, eye, electroreceptors and lateral line, respectively) in juveniles and adults of seven species of elasmobranch (six species of shark and one species of ray). The relative volume of each brain area was expressed as proportion of the total sensory brain, the combined volume of the four brain areas. Significant differences were found in the relative proportions of the sensory brain areas between juveniles and adults. In all species, the optic tectum was relatively larger in juveniles, whereas the size of the olfactory bulbs was relatively greater in adults. This paper provides the first evidence for shifts in the size of sensory brain areas in elasmobranchs and suggests that vision is relatively more important than olfaction in juvenile elasmobranchs and vice versa in adults.

Volumetric analysis of sensory brain areas indicates ontogenetic shifts in the relative importance of sensory systems in elasmobranchs

Elasmobranch fishes, including sharks, rays, and skates, use specialized electrosensory organs called ampullae of Lorenzini to detect extremely small changes in environmental electric fields. Electrosensory cells within these ampullae can discriminate and respond to minute changes in environmental voltage gradients through an unknown mechanism. Here we show that the voltage-gated calcium channel CaV1.3 and the big conductance calcium-activated potassium (BK) channel are preferentially expressed by electrosensory cells in little skate (Leucoraja erinacea) and functionally couple to mediate electrosensory cell membrane voltage oscillations, which are important for the detection of specific, weak electrical signals. Both channels exhibit unique properties compared with their mammalian orthologues that support electrosensory functions: structural adaptations in CaV1.3 mediate a low-voltage threshold for activation, and alterations in BK support specifically tuned voltage oscillations. These findings reveal a molecular basis of electroreception and demonstrate how discrete evolutionary changes in ion channel structure facilitate sensory adaptation.

Molecular basis of ancestral vertebrate electroreception

This study examined the response properties of skate electrosensory primary afferent neurons of pre-hatch embryo (8-11 weeks), post-hatch juvenile (1-8 months), and adult (> 2 year) clearnose skates (Raja eglanteria) to determine whether encoding of electrosensory information changes with age, and if the electrosense is adapted to encode natural bioelectric stimuli across life history stages. During ontogeny, electrosensory primary afferents increase resting discharge rate, spike regularity, and sensitivity at best frequency. Best frequency was at 1-2 Hz for embryos, showed an upwards shift to 5 Hz in juveniles, and a downward shift to 2-3 HZ in adults. Encapsulated embryos exhibit ventilatory movements that are interrupted by a "freeze response" when presented with weak uniform fields at 0.5 and 1 Hz. This phasic electric stimulus contains spectral information found in potentials produced by natural fish predators, and therefore indicates that the embryo electrosense can efficiently mediate predator detection and avoidance. In contrast, reproductively active adult clearnose skates discharge their electric organs at rates near the peak frequency sensitivity of the adult electrosensory system, which; facilitates electric communication during social behavior. We suggest that life-history-dependent functions such as these may shape the evolution of the low-frequency response properties for the elasmobranch electrosensory system.
