Diffraction methods are at the heart of structure determination of solids. While Bragg-type scattering (pure point diffraction) is a characteristic feature of crystals and quasicrystals, it is not straightforward to interpret continuous diffraction intensities, which are generally linked to the presence of disorder. However, based on simple model systems, we demonstrate that it may be impossible to draw conclusions on the degree of order in the system from its diffraction image. In particular, we construct a family of one-dimensional binary systems which cover the entire entropy range but still share the same purely diffuse diffraction spectrum.

Kinematic diffraction is insufficient to distinguish order from disorder

Kinematic diffraction is well suited for a mathematical approach via measures, which has substantially been developed since the discovery of quasicrystals. The need for further insight emerged from the question of which distributions of matter, beyond perfect crystals, lead to pure point diffraction, hence to sharp Bragg peaks only. More recently, it has become apparent that one also has to study continuous diffraction in more detail, with a careful analysis of the different types of diffuse scattering involved. In this review, we summarise some key results, with particular emphasis on non-periodic structures. We choose an exposition on the basis of characteristic examples, while we refer to the existing literature for proofs and further details.

Mathematical diffraction of aperiodic structures

Mathematical diffraction theory is concerned with the analysis of the diffraction image of a given structure and the corresponding inverse problem of structure determination. In recent years, the understanding of systems with continuous and mixed spectra has improved considerably. Simultaneously, their relevance has grown in practice as well. In this context, the phenomenon of homometry shows various unexpected new facets. This is particularly so for systems with stochastic components.
After an introduction to the mathematical tools, we briefly discuss pure point spectra, based on the Poisson summation formula for lattice Dirac combs. This provides an elegant approach to the diffraction formulas of infinite crystals and quasicrystals. We continue by considering classic deterministic examples with singular or absolutely continuous diffraction spectra. In particular, we recall an isospectral family of structures with continuously varying entropy. We close with a summary of more recent results on the diffraction of dynamical systems of algebraic or stochastic origin.

Kinematic diffraction from a mathematical viewpoint

The discovery of quasicrystals has changed our view of some of the most basic notions related to the condensed state of matter. Before the age of quasicrystals, it was believed that crystals break the continuous translation and rotation symmetries of the liquid-phase into a discrete lattice of translations, and a finite group of rotations. Quasicrystals, on the other hand, possess no such symmetries—there are no translations, nor, in general, are there any rotations, leaving them invariant. Does this imply that no symmetry is left, or that the meaning of symmetry should be revised? We review this and other questions related to the liquid-to-crystal symmetry-breaking transition using the notion of indistinguishability. We characterize the order-parameter space, describe the different elementary excitations, phonons and phasons, and discuss the nature of dislocations—keeping in mind that we are now living in the age of quasicrystals.

Kinematic Diffraction from a Mathematical Viewpoint

The three-dimensional configuration of crystallized structures is obtained by reading off partial information about the Fourier transform of such structures from diffraction data obtained with an X-ray source. We consider a discrete version of this problem and discuss the extent to which `intensity only' measurements as well as `higher-order invariants' can be used to settle the reconstruction problem. This discrete version is an extension of the study undertaken by Patterson in terms of `cyclotomic sets', corresponding to arrangements of equal atoms that can occupy positions on a circle subdivided into N equally spaced markings. This model comes about when the usual three-dimensional Fourier transform is replaced by a one-dimensional discrete Fourier transform. The model in this paper considers molecules made up of atoms with possibly different (integer-valued) atomic numbers. It is shown that information of order six suffices to determine a structure uniquely.
