Turbo Coding, Turbo Equalisation and Space-Time Coding for Transmission over Fading Channels

M inimum Shift Keying (MSK) [ 11 or Fast Frequency Shift Keying (FFSK) is a digital modulation technique with constant amplitude which has been studied extensively during recent years. The properties of MSK are now understood [2-51. In this article, we report on methods to improve on MSK while maintaining a constant amplitude. By improvement we mean a narrower power spectrum, lower spectral sidelobes, better error probability, or all of the above. The cost of signal processing and the speed and complexity with which it can be performed has steadily been improved over recent years. Further improvements are to be expected. Therefore, it is reasonable to study what can be accomplished with methods that might be too complex for cost effective realization today, but perhaps may be easily achievable tomorrow. In this paper, we consider a number of methods for constructing constant amplitude signals which significantly outperform MSK [5-1031. We also discuss at what level of complexity these improvements are obtained and realized.

Continuous phase modulation

Against the backdrop of the emerging 3G wireless personal communications standards and broadband access network standard proposals, this volume covers a range of coding and transmission aspects for transmission over fading wireless channels. It presents the most important classic channel coding issues and also the exciting advances of the last decade, such as turbo coding, turbo equalisation and space-time coding. It endeavours to be the first book with explicit emphasis on channel coding for transmission over wireless channels. Divided into 4 parts: Part 1 - explains the necessary background for novices. The book systematically converts the lessons of Shannon's information theory into design principles applicable to practical wireless systems. It provides overall design performance studies, giving cognizance to the contradictory design requirements of bit error rate, implementational complexity, coding and interleaving delay, effective throughput, coding rate and other related systems design aspects in a comprehensive manner.

Turbo Coding, Turbo Equalisation and Space-Time Coding: EXIT-Chart-Aided Near-Capacity Designs for Wireless Channels

In an exemplary communication system, a multiplicity of mobile terminals are to share a communication link with a host processor communicating through base transceivers. The mobile terminals evaluate communication signals being transmitted to one or more of the mobile transceivers and according to the evaluation of such signals, each mobile terminal independently selects a relatively high data rate or a lower more conservative data rate for communication with the host processor. The mobile terminal enters a dormant state after a fixed period elapses during which the mobile unit is not engaged in communication with the base station. Periodically, the mobile terminal reenters active state in receive mode for a brief interval and if no polling signal or other message directed to the mobile terminal is present, the mobile terminal returns to dormant state. When a signal is directed to the mobile terminal, the mobile terminal remains in active receive mode until a fixed period after a communication session is completed and then returns to dormant/active cycling. A base station utilizing a dormant polling protocol transmits polling sequences to a plurality of remote transceivers during periods of heavy loading. During periods of low loading, the base station stops polling and enters into a dormant state, listening for communication request from the remote transceivers. Upon receiving such a request, the base station immediately responds by servicing the requesting remote transceiver. In this way, the base station provides optimized utilization of the communication channel during periods of heavy and light loading conditions.

Remote radio data communication system with data rate switching

Minimum shift keying with Gaussian shaped transmit pulses is a strong candidate for a modulation technique that satisfies the stringent out-of-band radiated power requirements of the mobil radio application. Numerous studies and field experiments have been conducted by the Japanese on urban and suburban mobile radio channels with systems employing Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK) transmission and differentially coherent reception. A comprehensive analytical treatment is presented of the performance of such systems emphasizing the important trade-offs among the various system design parameters such as transmit and receiver filter bandwidths and detection threshold level. It is shown that two-bit differential detection of GMSK is capable of offering far superior performance to the more conventional one-bit detection method both in the presence of an additive Gaussian noise background and Rician fading.
