This review paper intends to provide an overall vision of SBR technology as an alternative method for treating wastewaters. This technology has been gaining popularity through the years, mainly because of its single-tank design and ease of automatation. The bibliographic review carried out here shows the efficiency and flexibility of this technology, as it is able to treat different kinds of effluents such as municipal, domestic, hypersaline, tannery, brewery, and dairy wastewaters; landfill leachates; etc.; under different conditions. The review includes relevant experiments carried out at the laboratory, pilot-plant, and industrial scales.

Utilization of SBR Technology for Wastewater Treatment: An Overview

The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor has been recognized as an important wastewater treatment technology among anaerobic treatment methods. The objective of this study was to perform literature review on the treatment of domestic sewage using the UASB reactor as the core component and identifying future areas of research. The merits of anaerobic and aerobic bioreactors are highlighted and other sewage treatment technologies are compared with UASB on the basis of performance, resource recovery potential, and cost. The comparison supports UASB as a suitable option on the basis of performance, green energy generation, minimal space requirement, and low capital, operation, and maintenance costs. The main process parameters such as temperature, hydraulic retention time (HRT), organic loading rate (OLR), pH, granulation, and mixing and their effects on the performance of UASB reactor and hydrogen production are presented for achieving optimal results. Feasible posttreatment steps are also identified for effective discharge and/or reuse of treated water.

Review of Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor Technology: Effect of Different Parameters and Developments for Domestic Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater nitrogen removal in Sbrs, applying a step-feed strategy: from lab-scale to pilot-plant operation.

A methodology was proposed for the model calibration of nutrient removing lab-scale SBR’s under limited aeration. Based on in-process measurements and influent wastewater characterization, the ASM2d model was modified by adding an organic nitrogen module linked to the hydrolysis mechanism. After calibration the simulation results showed that enhanced biological nutrient removal occurred during the fill-period and under reduced aeration that achieves so-called ‘Simultaneous Nutrient Removal’. A model-based systems analysis was performed in terms of the contributions of the different processes to overall oxygen, nitrogen and phosphate utilization. In addition, simultaneously occurring biological reactions were compared during the different phases.
