The omega phase is a metastable phase which forms in alloys of titanium and zirconium with most transition metals. In this paper the available data from both alloy systems on the occurrence, the structure, the mechanism of formation, and the morphology of the phase are reviewed and compared. The effect of omega phase on the mechanical behaviour and on the superconducting properties is then discussed. It is concluded that uncertainties still exist on the mechanism of the omega transformation during quenching and on the mechanism of the effect of omega on the mechanical properties.

The formation of omega phase in titanium and zirconium alloys: A review

We review the theory of vortices in trapped dilute Bose-Einstein condensates and compare theoretical predictions with existing experiments. Mean-field theory based on the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation describes the main features of the vortex states, and its predictions agree well with available experimental results. We discuss various properties of a single vortex, including its structure, energy, dynamics, normal modes, and stability, as well as vortex arrays. When the nonuniform condensate contains a vortex, the excitation spectrum includes unstable (`anomalous') mode(s) with negative frequency. Trap rotation shifts the normal-mode frequencies and can stabilize the vortex. We consider the effect of thermal quasiparticles on vortex normal modes as well as possible mechanisms for vortex dissipation. Vortex states in mixtures and spinor condensates are also discussed.

Vortices in a trapped dilute Bose-Einstein condensate

When two vortices cross, each of them breaks into two parts and exchanges part of itself for part of the other. This process, called vortex reconnection, occurs in classical and superfluids, and in magnetized plasmas and superconductors. We present the first experimental observations of reconnection between quantized vortices in superfluid helium. We do so by imaging micrometer-sized solid hydrogen particles trapped on quantized vortex cores and by inferring the occurrence of reconnection from the motions of groups of recoiling particles. We show that the distance separating particles on the just-reconnected vortex lines grows as a power law in time. The average value of the scaling exponent is approximately ½, consistent with the self-similar evolution of the vortices.

Characterization of reconnecting vortices in superfluid helium.

The combination of magnetic nanoparticles with thermoresponsive polymer systems leads to the formation of hybrid particle dispersions or composites with a variety of interesting properties and perspectives, including instant dispensability, thermoreversible formation of magnetic fluids, and novel magnetoresponsive properties. Special interest is gained by the magnetic heatability of magnetic particles that allows the activation of thermal effects by the application of a high-frequency electromagnetic field. This review summarizes the recent developments in this young field of research with application potential for magnetic separation, drug release systems, and for sensor and actuator purposes.
