In a long 130 years of its journey in service to mankind, the power transformer has grown in many aspects; ratings, performance, technology, aesthetics and eco-friendliness. Today, the transformer industry is witnessing the era of shifting from petroleum based mineral oils that are depleting, environmentally unfavorable, and proven dangerous to natural esters (vegetable oil based) that are renewable, environmentally friendly, and non-hazardous. The market and regulatory pressures to reduce liability risk exposure of mineral-oil-filled distribution and power transformers are increasing. In addition, there are demands to improve equipment efficiency and adopt more "earth-friendly" options in our power systems. In the last two decades there has been a resurgence of usage of natural ester insulating liquids for their "GREEN" and Safety credentials. These renewable resources have good dielectric properties and are compatible for use in power transformers. This paper evaluates and relates the new natural ester oil with existing mineral oil technology in terms of environmental concern, fire safety, physio-chemical properties, thermal performance, and dielectric performance. It also covers key modifications in design, manufacturing and operation to help assure excellent functionality and long life. In brief, this paper provides transformer designers and users about the advantages and challenges of "Green Insulating Liquid". Due to the voluminous properties that are compared and discussed, this paper is presented in two parts: Part 1 discusses on key properties and standards for the two liquids. Part 2 emphasizes on additional key properties and material compatibility related to electrical design. Based on evidence discussed in both parts, it is concluded that natural esters are acceptable for both new transformers and for retro filling existing units.

A review of critical evaluation of natural ester vis-a-vis mineral oil insulating liquid for use in transformers: Part II

Space charge behavior is important in the oil-immersed-paper insulation in converter transformers for HVDC transmission. This paper reports an investigation of the space charge property in samples with two layers of oil-immersed-paper and oil. Based on pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique, a waveform recovery method was proposed to get rid of the effects of interface and anisotropy on PEA result, and the space charge distributions in the two-layer samples under different voltage and oil thicknesses were measured. It's found that the charges with the same polarity as oil side electrode were accumulated at the interface and gradually increased with the increase of applied voltage. However, the positive charge charges always appeared in the oil under positive and negative voltages. Moreover, the charges in samples increased with the increase of applied voltage, while the amount of interface charges decreased with the increase of oil thickness. Due to the existence of interfacial charges, the electrical field in oil-immersed-paper was distorted with its maximum close to the interface. It is indicated that due to the different mobility properties of charges in paper and oil and the interface trap state, the interface between paper and oil plays an important role in charge formation and decay.

Increase in global energy demand and constraints from fossil fuels have encouraged a growing share of renewable energy resources in the utility grid. Accordingly, an increased penetration of direct current (DC) power sources and loads (e.g., solar photovoltaics and electric vehicles) as well as the necessity for active power flow control has been witnessed in the power distribution networks. Passive transformers are susceptible to DC offset and possess no controllability when employed in smart grids. Solid state transformers (SSTs) are identified as a potential solution to modernize and harmonize alternating current (AC) and DC electrical networks and as suitable solutions in applications such as traction, electric ships, and aerospace industry. This paper provides a complete overview on SST: concepts, topologies, classification, power converters, material selection, and key aspects for design criteria and control schemes proposed in the literature. It also proposes a simple terminology to identify and homogenize the large number of definitions and structures currently reported in the literature.

Solid state transformers: concepts, classification, and control

This paper reviews briefly the history of paper and pressboard insulation being used for electric insulation of oil immersed power transformers. An introduction to today's insulation technique is given. Important details of materials selection, as well as drying, clamping and oil impregnation procedures required to achieve short-circuit resistant windings are explained. Aging effects are described, as they gradually weaken the solid insulation mechanically and electrically. The value of post-mortem analysis of transformers before scrapping is shown with examples. A list of factors important for the manufacturing and operation of reliable transformers, yet often neglected, completes this article.
