Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is an emerging new technology integrating ad hoc network, wireless LAN (WLAN) and cellular technology to achieve intelligent inter-vehicle communications and improve road traffic safety and efficiency. VANETs are distinguished from other kinds of ad hoc networks by their hybrid network architectures, node movement characteristics, and new application scenarios. Therefore, VANETs pose many unique networking research challenges, and the design of an efficient routing protocol for VANETs is very crucial. In this article, we discuss the research challenge of routing in VANETs and survey recent routing protocols and related mobility models for VANETs.

Routing in vehicular ad hoc networks: A survey

Inter-vehicle communication (IVC) systems (i.e., systems not relying on roadside infrastructure) have the potential to radically improve the safety, efficiency, and comfort of everyday road travel. Their main advantage is that they bypass the need for expensive infrastructure; their major drawback is the comparatively complex networking protocols and the need for significant penetration before their applications can become effective. In this article we present several major classes of applications and the types of services they require from an underlying network. We then proceed to analyze existing networking protocols in a bottom-up fashion, from the physical to the transport layers, as well as security aspects related to IVC systems. We conclude the article by presenting several projects related to IVC as well as a review of common performance evaluation techniques for IVC systems.

Position-based routing in vehicular networks: A survey

Covering the fundamental theory together with the state-of-the-art in research and development, this practical guide provides the techniques needed to design, analyze, and optimize device-to-device (D2D) communications in wireless networking. With an ever-increasing demand for higher data rate wireless access, D2D communication is set to become a key feature supported by next generation cellular networks. This book introduces D2D-based wireless communications from the physical, MAC, network, and application layer perspectives, providing all the key background information before moving on to discuss real-world applications as well as potential future developments. Wireless Device-to-Device Communications and Networks

A vehicular ad hoc network consists of smart vehicles on the road and provides communication services among nearby vehicles or with roadside infrastructure. It is envisioned to provide numerous interesting services in the near future. This chapter first introduces the basic application scenarios of vehicular ad hoc network and its unique characteristics, and then provides a brief survey of several research issues in vehicular ad hoc networks, such as routing, data sharing, mobility models, and security.

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

An IVC (Inter-vehicle communication) network is a type of mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) in which high-speed vehicles send, receive, and forward packets via other vehicles on the roads. An IVC network can provide useful applications in future Intelligent Transportation Systems. However, due to frequent network topology changes, a routing path in an IVC network breaks easily. As such, a routing protocol proposed for general MANET (e.g., AODV) performs poorly in IVC networks. To address this problem, we designed and implemented an intelligent flooding-based routing protocol and conducted several field trials to evaluate its performance on the roads. Results obtained from field trials show that (1) our protocol outperforms AODV significantly on IVC networks, and (2) our protocol can make many useful services such as email, ftp, web, video conferencing, and video broadcasting applicable on IVC networks for vehicle users.
