Oxide nanofluids were produced and their thermal conductivities were measured by a transient hot-wire method. The experimental results show that these nanofluids, containing a small amount of nanoparticles, have substantially higher thermal conductivities than the same liquids without nanoparticles. Comparisons between experiments and the Hamilton and Crosser model show that the model can predict the thermal conductivity of nanofluids containing large agglomerated Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles. However, the model appears to be inadequate for nanofluids containing CuO particles. This suggests that not only particle shape but size is considered to be dominant in enhancing the thermal conductivity of nanofluids.

Measuring Thermal Conductivity of Fluids Containing Oxide Nanoparticles

The optical properties of the light-absorbing, carbonaceous substance often called “soot,” “black carbon,” or “carbon black" have been the subject of some debate. These properties are necessary to model how aerosols affect climate, and our review is targeted specifically for that application. We recommend the term light-absorbing carbon to avoid conflict with operationally based definitions. Absorptive properties depend on molecular form, particularly the size of sp 2-bonded clusters. Freshly-generated particles should be represented as aggregates, and their absorption is like that of particles small relative to the wavelength. Short-pulse laser heating on metals

This study uses the molecular dynamics computational technique to investigate the thermal conductivity of solid thin films in the direction perpendicular to the film plane. In order to establish a benchmark reference, the computations are based on the widely used Lennard-Jones argon model due to its agreement with experimental liquid-phase data, its physically meaningful parameters, and its simple two-body form. Thermal conductivity increases with film thickness, as expected from thin-film experimental data and theoretical predictions. The calculated values are roughly 30 percent higher than anticipated. Varying the boundary conditions, heat flux, and lateral dimensions of the films causes no observable change in the thermal conductivity values. The present study also delineates the conditions necessary for meaningful thermal conductivity calculations and offers recommendations for efficient simulations. This work shows that molecular dynamics, applied under the correct conditions, is a viable tool for calculating the thermal conductivity of solid thin films. More generally, it demonstrates the potential of molecular dynamics for ascertaining microscale thermophysical properties in complex structures.

Thermal Radiation in Packed and Fluidized Beds

This work develops a new measurement technique that determines the thermal diffusivity of thin films in both parallel and perpendicular directions, and presents experimental results on the thermal diffusivity of GaAs/AlGaAs-based thin-film structures. In the experiment, a modulated laser source heats up the sample and a fast-response temperature sensor patterned directly on the sample picks up the thermal response. From the phase delay between the heating source and the temperature sensor, the thermal diffusivity in either the parallel or perpendicular direction is obtained depending on the experimental configuration. The experiment is performed on a molecular-beam-epitaxy grown vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) structure. The substrates of the samples are etched away to eliminate the effects of the interface between the film and the substrate. The results show that the thermal diffusivity of the VCSEL structure is 5-7 times smaller than that of its corresponding bulk media. The experiments also provide evidence on the anisotropy of thermal diffusivity caused solely by the effects of interfaces and boundaries of thin films. 23 refs., 9 figs., 1 tab.
