Considerable diversity is exhibited by current definitions of the concept of trust. This paper argues that there may nevertheless be an identifiable core to the concept. On the basis of an analysis of five scenarios in which some agent x trusts some other agent y, it is suggested that two beliefs--here called the 'rule-belief' and the 'conformity-belief'--form the core of the trusting attitude. The informal account of trust presented here identifies the kinds of modalities that would figure in a modal-logical specification of the conditions under which one agent can be said to trust another.

Research on trust: a bibliography and brief bibliometric analysis of the special issue submissions

The availability and continued growth of Internet technologies (IT) have created great opportunities for users all over the globe to benefit from these services and use them in a variety of different ways. The use of IT to conduct business online is known as Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce). While developed countries have harnessed and adopted E-Commerce, developing countries are not yet fully adapted to its adoption. The aim of this study is to investigate the main factors that play a role in the adoption of E-Commerce from a consumer’s perceptive and, hence, develop a framework that conceptualises the influential factors (enablers and disablers) of E-Commerce. A ‘grounded theory’ methodology was used to collect and analyse the data and develop the proposed framework. Thus, semi-structured interviews were conducted with Saudi residents to elicit their opinions about E-Commerce enablers and disablers in Saudi Arabia. The findings of the study suggest that the factors that have the most significant impact on the adoption of E-Commerce in Saudi Arabia are security, fraud and hacking, trust, cyber-law, awareness and perceived usefulness, postal services, government e-readiness, resistance to change, the presence of commercial electronic websites, cost, tangibility, warranty, trial and experience.

The Enablers and Disablers of E-Commerce: Consumers’ Perspectives

Traditional business practice depends on trust relations between the transacting parties. One of the most important aspects of this trust is the quality of the offered services or products. The Web currently constitutes an enabler for electronic commerce, providing a global transaction platform that does not require physical presence. However, transferring trust from the physical world to the electronic one is a process that requires a trust infrastructure. The current infrastructure, based on trusted third parties can be enhanced. We introduce the notion of digital seals and provide a mechanism for transferring the trust placed by users in companies in the physical world, to the electronic one.

Securing distributed adaptation

The PEM and PGP/X.509 authentication models and the Biba Integrity Model have limitations inherent in their design that diminish their practicality in real world applications. The ICE-TEL trust model addresses some of these difficulties, and introduces a few new limitations. The Common Security Services Manager's Trust Policy Interface Specification provides the guidelines with which new trust policies may be encoded, but does not implement an actual policy. This paper describes a new model that permits both the identity of the sender of a message, and the trustworthiness of the sender of the message to be determined. The model works regardless of whether or not the message was signed by a certificate authority with which the recipient has a relationship. The model can be implemented without changing the format of certificates that are currently in use, and could be used as a module in a broader security framework, such as the Common Security Services Manager.
