TL;DR: It is concluded that both primary and secondary hypogonadism occur transiently in acutely ill men and cannot be explained solely by medications, hyperprolactinemia, or hyperestrogenemia.

Differential changes in serum concentrations of androgens and estrogens (in relation with cortisol) in postmenopausal women with acute illness

TL;DR: In agonadal patients with acute critical illness, serum levels of DHEA-S and T are selectively decreased in relation to F, delta 4-A, and estrogens, and a marked increase in the ratio of estrogens to androgens in acute illness requires further investigation.
