Characterizing flow and transport in fractured geological media: A review

Scaling in fracture systems has become an active field of research in the last 25 years motivated by practical applications in hazardous waste disposal, hy- drocarbon reservoir management, and earthquake haz- ard assessment. Relevant publications are therefore spread widely through the literature. Although it is rec- ognized that some fracture systems are best described by scale-limited laws (lognormal, exponential), it is now recognized that power laws and fractal geometry provide widely applicable descriptive tools for fracture system characterization. A key argument for power law and fractal scaling is the absence of characteristic length scales in the fracture growth process. All power law and fractal characteristics in nature must have upper and lower bounds. This topic has been largely neglected, but recent studies emphasize the importance of layering on all scales in limiting the scaling characteristics of natural fracture systems. The determination of power law expo- nents and fractal dimensions from observations, al- though outwardly simple, is problematic, and uncritical use of analysis techniques has resulted in inaccurate and even meaningless exponents. We review these tech- niques and suggest guidelines for the accurate and ob- jective estimation of exponents and fractal dimensions. Syntheses of length, displacement, aperture power law exponents, and fractal dimensions are found, after crit- ical appraisal of published studies, to show a wide vari- ation, frequently spanning the theoretically possible range. Extrapolations from one dimension to two and from two dimensions to three are found to be nontrivial, and simple laws must be used with caution. Directions for future research include improved techniques for gathering data sets over great scale ranges and more rigorous application of existing analysis methods. More data are needed on joints and veins to illuminate the differences between different fracture modes. The phys- ical causes of power law scaling and variation in expo- nents and fractal dimensions are still poorly understood.

Scaling of fracture systems in geological media

Natural fractures have long been suspected as a factor in production from shale reservoirs because gas and oil production commonly exceeds the rates expected from low-porosity and low-permeability shale host rock. Many shale outcrops, cores, and image logs contain fractures or fracture traces, and microseismic event patterns associated with hydraulic-fracture stimulation have been ascribed to natural fracture reactivation. Here we review previous work, and present new core and outcrop data from 18 shale plays that reveal common types of shale fractures and their mineralization, orientation, and size patterns. A wide range of shales have a common suite of types and configurations of fractures: those at high angle to bedding, faults, bed-parallel fractures, early compacted fractures, and fractures associated with concretions. These fractures differ markedly in their prevalence and arrangement within each shale play, however, constituting different fracture stratigraphies—differences that depend on interface and mechanical properties governed by depositional, diagenetic, and structural setting. Several mechanisms may act independently or in combination to cause fracture growth, including differential compaction, local and regional stress changes associated with tectonic events, strain accommodation around large structures, catagenesis, and uplift. Fracture systems in shales are heterogeneous; they can enhance or detract from producibility, augment or reduce rock strength and the propensity to interact with hydraulic-fracture stimulation. Burial history and fracture diagenesis influence fracture attributes and may provide more information for fracture prediction than is commonly appreciated. The role of microfractures in production from shale is currently poorly understood yet potentially critical; we identify a need for further work in this field and on the role of natural fractures generally.

Rock Fractures in Geological Processes

Studies assembling high quality datasets of fracture systems (joints and faults) from four reservoir analogues are described. These comprise limestones (Ireland), sandstones (Norway and Saudi Arabia) and chalk (Denmark). These are used with existing information from the literature to review the major controls and scaling behaviour of fracture systems expected in reservoir rocks. Lithological layering was found to be important and two end-member fracture systems have been identified. In "stratabound" systems, fractures are confined to single layers, sizes are scale restricted, and spacing is regular. In "non-stratabound systems", fractures show a wide range of sizes (often power-law), are spatially clustered and vertically persistent. In nature, variations between and combinations of these systems exist. These end-member systems have contrasting implications for fluid flow, including the scale of fracture that controls flow and the existence of a representative elementary volume, and thus on appropriate modelling approaches.
