Half of all insect species are dependent on living plant tissues, consuming about 10% of plant annual production in natural habitats and an even greater percentage in agricultural systems, despite sophisticated control measures. Plants are generally remarkably well-protected against insect attack, with the result that most insects are highly specialized feeders. The mechanisms underlying plant resistance to invading herbivores on the one side, and insect food specialization on the other, are the main subjects of this book. For insects these include food-plant selection and the complex sensory processes involved, with their implications for learning and nutritional physiology, as well as the endocrinological spects of life cycle synchronization with host plant phenology. In the case of plants exposed to insect herbivores, they include the activation of defence systems in order to minimize damage, as well as the emission of chemical signals that may attract natural enemies of the invading herbivores and maybe exploited by neighbouring plants that mount defences as well.

Insect-plant biology

To investigate the potential for and constraints on the evolution of compensatory ability, we performed a greenhouse experiment using Asclepias syriaca in which foliar damage and soil nutrient concentration were manipulated. Under low nutrient conditions, significant genetic variation was detected for allocation patterns and for compensatory ability. Furthermore, resource allocation to storage was positively, genetically correlated both with compensatory ability and biomass when damaged, the last two being positively, genetically correlated with each other. Thus, in the low nutrient environment, compensatory ability via resource allocation to storage provided greater biomass when damaged. A negative genetic correlation between compensatory ability and plant biomass when undamaged suggests that this mechanism entailed an allocation cost, which would constrain the evolution of greater compensatory ability when nutrients are limited. Under high nutrient conditions, neither compensatory ability nor allocation patterns predicted biomass when damaged, even though genetic variation in compensatory ability existed. Instead, plant biomass when undamaged predicted biomass when damaged. The differences in outcomes between the two nutrient treatments highlight the importance of considering the possible range of environmental conditions that a genotype may experience. Furthermore, traits that conferred compensatory ability did not necessarily contribute to biomass when damaged, demonstrating that it is critical to examine both compensatory ability and biomass when damaged to determine whether selection by herbivores can favor the evolution of increased compensation.

The potential for and constraints on the evolution of compensatory ability in Asclepias syriaca.

Although insect herbivores have many well documented effects on plant performance, there are few studies that assess the impact of above-ground herbivory on below-ground plant growth. For a seven year period in which no large-scale herbivore outbreaks occurred, a broad spectrum insecticide was utilized to suppress herbivorous insects in a natural community dominated by Solidago altissima. Ramet heights, rhizome lengths, rhizome biomass, and the number of daughter rhizomes all were lower in the control plots than in the insecticidetreated plots. These effects should lead to a decrease in the fitness of genets in the control plots relative to the fitness of genets in the insecticide-treated plots. We also found that ramets in the control plots appear to have compensated for herbivory: the ratio of rhizome length to rhizome biomass was greatest in the control plots, which indicates that clones moved farther per unit biomass in these plots than in the insecticide-treated plots. Clonal growth models show that this shift in allocation patterns greatly reduced the magnitude of treatment differences in long-term clonal displacements. Previous work has shown, and this study verified, that clonal growth in S. altissima is well represented by random-walk and diffusion models. Therefore, we used these models to examine possible treatment differences in rates of clonal expansion. Although rhizome lengths were greater in the insecticide-treated plots, results from the models suggest that our treatments had little impact on the short- and long-term displacement of S. altissima ramets from a point of origin. This occurred because S. altissima ramets backtrack often, and thus, treatment differences in net displacements are less pronounced than treatment differences in rhizome lengths.

Long-term suppression of insect herbivores increases the production and growth of Solidago altissima rhizomes

The influence of Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia Mordvilko) infestation on the response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ev Hazen) plants to drought stress was investigated. Fourteen-day-old plants were infested with eight apterous adult aphids, which were removed 7 days later with systemic insecticide. Leaves previously infested with aphids had lower relative water content, reduced stomatal conductance, more negative water potential, lower levels of chlorophyll and higher levels of amino-N, proline and glycinebetaine than corresponding leaves from uninfested plants. When water was withheld for a period of 7 days after aphids were removed, the relative water content of previously infested plants dropped steadily from 0.89 to 0.60, while the relative water content of uninfested plants remained at about 0.94 for the first 4 days of the drought stress period followed by a steady drop to about 0.77 by the end of the drought stress period. Leaf water potentials dropped steadily during the drought stress period in both previously infested (-1.14 to -1.91 MPa) and unin-fested (-0.54 to -1.52 MPa) plants. Analysis of glycinebetaine and proline levels at the end of the drought stress period indicated that leaves of previously infested plants accumulated lower levels of these solutes than leaves from uninfested plants. Upon alleviation of drought stress, plants previously infested with aphids showed little increase in dry weight while younger leaves and tillers from uninfested plants showed large increases. It is concluded that Russian wheat aphids cause drought-stress symptoms in leaves of infested plants even in the presence of ample root moisture. The observations of low levels of glycinebetaine and proline present in leaves after water was withheld from roots and lack of leaf growth upon alleviation of drought stress in previously-infested plants, suggest that aphid infestation limits the capacity of barley plants to adjust successfully to drought stress.

Effects of Russian wheat aphid infestation on barley plant response to drought stress

Although spectral remote sensing techniques have been used to study many ecological variables and biotic and abiotic stresses to agricultural crops over decades, the potential use of these techniques for greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) infestations and damage to wheat, Triticum aestivum L., under field conditions is unknown. Hence, this research was conducted to investigate: 1) the applicability and feasibility of using a portable narrow-banded (hyperspectral) remote sensing instrument to identify and discern differences in spectral reflection patterns (spectral signatures) of winter wheat canopies with and without greenbug damage; and 2) the relationship between miscellaneous spectral vegetation indices and greenbug density in wheat canopies growing in two fields and under greenhouse conditions. Both greenbug and reflectance data were collected from 0.25-, 0.37-, and 1-m2 plots in one of the fields, greenhouse, and the other field, respectively. Regardless of the growth conditions, greenbug-damaged wheat canopies had higher reflectance in the visible range and less in the near infrared regions of the spectrum when compared with undamaged canopies. In addition to percentage of reflectance comparison, a large number of spectral vegetation indices drawn from the literature were calculated and correlated with greenbug density. Linear regression analyses revealed high relationships (R2 ranged from 0.62 to 0.85) between greenbug density and spectral vegetation indices. These results indicate that hyperspectral remotely sensed data with an appropriate pixel size have the potential to portray greenbug density and discriminate its damage to wheat with repeated accuracy and precision.
