X.25 conformance testing—a tutorial

Despite the clear-cut differences in the stated aims, Signalling System Number 7 Network Services Part and X.25 are sometimes used interchangeably. We present in this paper a comparative study that shows that although many aspects of the two standards are quite similar, significant dissimilarities do exist. Caution is therefore required whenever the use of any of the two standards, in place of the other, is contemplated.

The great advances in computer and information technologies of recent years have led to a radical restructuring in the organization of the world's financial markets and the way in which the financial services industries operate. Two significant changes have been due to the rapid evolution of communications technologies: first, financial transactions can now be implemented online; and, secondly, improved access to remote databases has enabled financial decisions to be based upon more detailed and precise information. Institutes of higher education are having to respond to these changes by incorporating a greater degree of computer awareness into their teaching and by utilizing the technology to provide, at the very least, some kind of window on the financial world via properly designed laboratories with access to the financial information networks. At Lancaster University, the Department of Accounting and Finance has been subscribing to a remote financial database for some years now. This paper describes the facilities used to access and manipulate such information and shows how data from these sources can be used to provide a more stimulating and relevant learning environment.
