This critical review presents an overview of the various classes of oxide materials exhibiting fast oxide-ion or proton conductivity for use as solid electrolytes in clean energy applications such as solid oxide fuel cells. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between structural and mechanistic features of the crystalline materials and their ion conduction properties. After describing well-established classes such as fluorite- and perovskite-based oxides, new materials and structure-types are presented. These include a variety of molybdate, gallate, apatite silicate/germanate and niobate systems, many of which contain flexible structural networks, and exhibit different defect properties and transport mechanisms to the conventional materials. It is concluded that the rich chemistry of these important systems provides diverse possibilities for developing superior ionic conductors for use as solid electrolytes in fuel cells and related applications. In most cases, a greater atomic-level understanding of the structures, defects and conduction mechanisms is achieved through a combination of experimental and computational techniques (217 references).

Oxide-ion and proton conducting electrolyte materials for clean energy applications: structural and mechanistic features

The increasing world population and the need to improve quality of life for a large percentage of human beings are the driving forces for the search for sustainable energy production systems, alternative to fossil fuel combustion. Among the various types of alternative energy production technologies, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) operating at intermediate temperatures (400–700 °C) show the advantage of possible use both for stationary and mobile energy production. To reach the goal of reducing the SOFC operating temperature, proton-conducting oxides are gaining wide interest as electrolyte materials. This critical review provides a broad overview of the most recent progresses obtained tailoring the properties of proton-conducting oxides for fuel cell applications, analyzing and comparing the different strategies proposed to match high-proton conductivity with good chemical stability (170 references).

Materials challenges toward proton-conducting oxide fuel cells: a critical review

Superionic conductors are compounds that exhibit exceptionally high values of ionic conductivity within the solid state. Indeed, their conductivities often reach values of the order of 1 Ω−1 cm−1, which are comparable to those observed in the molten state. Following Faraday's first observation of high ionic conductivity within the solids β-PbF2 and Ag2S in 1836, a fundamental understanding of the nature of the superionic state has provided one of the major challenges in the field of condensed matter science. However, experimental and theoretical approaches to their study are often made difficult by the extensive dynamic structural disorder which characterizes superionic conduction and the inapplicability of many of the commonly used approximations in solid state physics. Nevertheless, a clearer picture of the nature of the superionic state at the ionic level has emerged within the past few decades. Many different techniques have contributed to these advances, but the most significant insights have been provided by neutron scattering experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. This review will summarize the state of current knowledge concerning the crystal structures and conduction processes of superionic conductors, beginning with a comparison of the behaviour of two of the most widely studied binary compounds, AgI and β-PbF2. Each can be considered a parent of two larger families of highly conducting compounds which are related by either chemical or structural means. These include perovskite-structured oxides and Li+ containing spinel-structured compounds, which have important commercial applications in fuel cells and lightweight batteries, respectively. In parallel with these discussions, the relative importance of factors such as bonding character and the properties of the mobile and immobile ions (charge, size, polarizability, etc) in promoting the extensive lattice disorder which characterizes superionic behaviour will be assessed and the possibilities for predicting a priori which compounds will display high ionic conductivity discussed.

Structural phase transitions, oxygen vacancy ordering and protonation in doped BaCeO3: results from time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction investigations

Proton conducting oxide ceramics have shown potential for use in fuel cell technologies. Understanding the energy pathways for proton conduction could help us design more efficient fuel cell materials. This paper describes how octahedral tilting affects the relative energies of proton binding sites, transition states, and conduction pathways in cubic and pseudo-cubic perovskites. First, the structure for cubic and pseudo-cubic forms of BaTiO3, BaZrO3, CaTiO3, and CaZrO3, is found. Even when cubic symmetry is enforced, CaTiO3, and CaZrO3 exhibit octahedral tilting distortions characteristic of orthorhombic phases while BaTiO3 and BaZrO3 remain undistorted. Octahedral tilting gives rise to proton binding sites facilitating inter- and intra-octahedral proton transfer while the proton binding sites of undistorted perovskites facilitate only intra-octahedral proton transfer. The nudged elastic band method is used to find minimum energy paths between the proton binding sites. As distortions increase, inter-octahedral proton transfer barriers decrease while intra-octahedral proton transfer barriers increase. Concurrently, rotational barriers from oxygens facilitating inter-octahedral proton transfer increase while rotational barriers from oxygens facilitating intra-octahedral proton transfer decrease. Intra-octahedral transfer is the rate-limiting step to the lowest energy extended proton conduction pathway in all the perovskites considered.
