The conventional ultrasonic method for compressed air leak detection utilizes a directivity-based ultrasonic leak detector (DULD) to locate the leak. The location accuracy of this method is low due to the limit of the nominal frequency and the size of the ultrasonic sensor. In order to overcome this deficiency, a method based on time delay estimation (TDE) is proposed. The method utilizes three ultrasonic sensors arranged in an equilateral triangle to simultaneously receive the ultrasound generated by the leak. The leak can be located according to time delays between every two sensor signals. The theoretical accuracy of the method is analyzed, and it is found that the location error increases linearly with delay estimation error and the distance from the leak to the sensor plane, and the location error decreases with the distance between sensors. The average square difference function delay estimator with parabolic fitting is used and two practical techniques are devised to remove the anomalous delay estimates. Experimental results indicate that the location accuracy using the TDE-based ultrasonic leak detector is 6.5–8.3 times as high as that using the DULD. By adopting the proposed method, the leak can be located more accurately and easily, and then the detection efficiency is improved.

Compressed air leak detection based on time delay estimation using a portable multi-sensor ultrasonic detector

Pneumatic actuators and electric actuators have almost been applied to all manufacturing industries. The two kinds of actuators can replace each other in most fields, such as the point to point transmission occasion and some rotating occasions. However, there are very few research results about the advantages and disadvantages of two kinds of actuators under the same working conditions so far. In this paper, a novel comprehensive assessment method, named as overall life cycle comprehensive assessment (OLCCA), is proposed for comparison and assessment of pneumatic and electric actuators. OLCCA contains mechanical properties evaluation (MPE), life cycle cost analysis based on users (LCCABOU) and life cycle environmental impact analysis (LCEIA) algorithm in order to solve three difficult problems: mechanical properties assessment, cost analysis and environmental impact assessment about actuators. The mechanical properties evaluation of actuators is a multi-objective optimization problem. The fuzzy data quantification and information entropy methods are combined to establish MPE algorithm of actuators. Two kinds of pneumatic actuators and electric actuators with similar bearing capacity and similar work stroke were taken for example to verify the correctness of MPE algorithm. The case study of MPE algorithm for actuators verified its correctness. LCCABOU for actuators is also set up. Considering cost complex structure of pneumatic actuators, public device cost even method (PDCEM) is firstly presented to solve cost division of public devices such as compressors, aftercooler, receivers, etc. LCCABOU method is also effective and verified by the three groups of pneumatic actuators and electric actuators. Finally, LCEIA model of actuators is established for the environmental impact assessment of actuators. LCEIA data collection method and model establishment procedure for actuators are also put forward. With Simapro 7, LCEIA comparison results of six actuators can be obtained: Fossil fuels are the major environmental factor of pneumatic and electric actuators; Environmental impact of electric actuator is large than one of pneumatic actuator under the similar mechanical properties and working conditions of pneumatic and electric actuators. The results are correct and correspond with the actual mechanical properties of actuators. This paper proposes a comprehensive evaluation method of the actuators, which can solve the critical problem that similar electromechanical products are very difficult to be compared with each other from the angle of performance, cost and environment impact.

Overall life cycle comprehensive assessment of pneumatic and electric actuator

Pneumatic booster regulators (PBR) are in great demand in modern pneumatic systems for their energy-saving abilities. A new booster regulator with energy recovery (VBA-R) was proposed, and its energy efficiency was investigated by introducing the concept of air power. On the basis of quality-alterable gas thermodynamics, an energy efficiency assessment and pressure response model for VBA-R was proposed. First, a model was solved using MATLAB/Simulink software, and an alternative experiment was designed to verify the mathematical model and performance improvement. The results showed that the simulation was consistent with the experiment. We also can conclude that, first of all, the energy efficiency decreases with the increasing of supply pressure and flow-rate consumption; a VBA-R has the highest efficiency when its diameter ratio is closest to 1.3. Finally, a recovery chamber helped to improve the performance of the VBA-R, which included a boost ratio improvement of 15–25% and an efficiency improvement of 5–10% compared with a conventional VBA booster regulator. This research lays the foundation for optimism regarding the proposed booster regulator.

Analysis of the Energy Efficiency of a Pneumatic Booster Regulator with Energy Recovery

Reducing carbon emissions is an urgent problem around the world while facing the energy and environmental crises. Whatever progress has been made in renewable energy research, efforts made to energy-saving technology is always necessary. The energy consumption from fluid power systems of industrial processes is considerable, especially for pneumatic systems. A novel isothermal compression method was proposed to lower the energy consumption of compressors. A porous medium was introduced to compose an isothermal piston. The porous medium was located beneath a conventional piston, and gradually immerged into the liquid during compression. The compression heat was absorbed by the porous medium, and finally conducted with the liquid at the chamber bottom. The heat transfer can be significantly enhanced due to the large surface area of the porous medium. As the liquid has a large heat capacity, the liquid temperature can maintain constant through circulation outside. This create near-isothermal compression, which minimizes energy loss in the form of heat, which cannot be recovered. There will be mass loss of the air due to dissolution and leakage. Therefore, the dissolution and leakage amount of gas are compensated for in this method. Gas is dissolved into liquid with the pressure increasing, which leads to mass loss of the gas. With a pressure ratio of 4:1 and a rotational speed of 100 rpm, the isothermal piston decreased the energy consumption by 45% over the conventional reciprocation piston. This gain was accomplished by increasing the heat transfer during the gas compression by increasing the surface area to volume ratio in the compression chamber. Frictional forces between the porous medium and liquid was presented. Work to overcome the frictional forces is negligible (0.21% of the total compression work) under the current operating condition.

A Novel Isothermal Compression Method for Energy Conservation in Fluid Power Systems.

In comparison to hydraulic and electrical actuators, the significant drawback of pneumatic actuators is low energy conversion ability which is due to the open-circuit structure in nature. This paper represents a hybrid pneumatic-electrical system for the purpose of recycling exhaust compressed air energy from existing pneumatic actuator outlets to generate electricity. A proper control strategy is developed to manage the actuator system operation and to ensure the energy recovery work well. The pneumatic- electrical system mathematical model and the simulation results are presented. The laboratory experimental tests are described. The system energy efficiency is also analyzed. The simulated and experimental studies demonstrate that the whole system operated by the designed controller can successfully recover exhaust compressed air energy under appropriate working conditions.

Study of a Pneumatic-electrical System for Exhaust Air Energy Recovery

Compared with the traditional energy consumption assessment method based on air flow rate,a new method using air power is presented.The air power is defined as the flux of the available energy of flowing compressed air.The available energy is the work-producing potential of compressed air under a surrounding of the atmospheric pressure and temperature.Air power is a relative potential in the atmospheric environment, because pneumatic systems work in the same environment. With air power,mechanism and factors making energy loss are discussed and some data of energy losses in pneumatic system are shown,which will make objective of energy savings clear.
