Abstract: This chapter reviews the general principles of remote sensing (RS) as an introduction to its application in the epidemiology and control of malaria in the Americas. First, the basic theory and concepts of RS are presented followed by a survey of some of the main satellite sensor systems that have been used or show potential in the field. Then, some data products derived from RS useful for mapping malaria risk are reviewed. Finally, the need of malaria risk maps for the Americas using RS is briefly discussed.
