Art in Public: Politics, Economics, and a Democratic Culture

While many commentators have held that the concept ‘alienation’ is of crucial importance when attempting to understand human existence, others have held that it is an inherently empty concept that we should abandon. In this article, I refute the latters’ charge by showing that each conception of ‘alienation’ is underpinned by a normative ontological conception of the preferable, or authentic, self and show that the concept ‘alienation’ has ethical, existential and socio-political uses. From this I conclude that, when properly understood, the concept ‘alienation’ can provide us with vital insights into human existence.

En el articulo se propone realizar una aproximacion al concepto que, de ciudadania y de competencias, subyace al discurso oficial en Colombia. Se pretende generar un analisis que ayude a complementar el debate contemporaneo sobre ciudadania y competencias, igualmente, que desarrolle de manera profunda la discusion sobre un tema que ha impactado el ambito academico colombiano.

Tolerance and hospitality are analysed as two dimensions in which the acceptance of difference operates in a political society (the first one, internal to it, the second one, external). Both are suggested to stem from, and to reinforce, experiences of reflective self-strangeness that lie in the heart of modernity. This article forwards an analysis of the internal logic –demands and restrictions– of these two dimensions and some ways in which their demands –at the epistemic, normative and political levels– intertwine in an era of globalization.

Liberal subject and community This article emphasizes the importance which the liberalism assigns to think the idea of community. To analyse the liberal pattern of society shows that this proposal comprises motives related to common good; therefore the political liberalism moves away of liber- tarism. However, against the homogeneous community defended by the communita- rists, Rawls proposes a complex and differentiated society. This society doesn't structure itself with a comprehensive doctrine, but with a shared conception of justice, which is compatible with the idea of citizens as free and equal people within a democratic State.

With Arendt's insight regarding the need of judgment in the background, this paper pursues the ways in which the need for theory, or political philosophy, articulates Rawls' overall approach in order to tell just from unjust institutions. It suggests that the Kantian mould of reflective judgment gives form to the construction of a theory of justice via the mechanism of reflective equilibrium. The need for theory so devised has to constantly move between the demands of theory itself - the social contract tradition as understood by Rawls - and the demands of action understood as the guide that our considered judgments lend to our understanding of the social world. Finally, it is also suggested that a particular grasp of the lessons of historical experience, as a way of fulfilling the need for theory that lies in the heart of the exercise of judgment, is what renders the Rawlsian proposal theoretically attractive, and what constantly underlies the construction of his theory via the particular exemplification and the theoretical rendering of the moral semantics underlying democratic culture.

Finally, an identity is not an ability to either show or offer a key word, a crucial sign (a proper noun) that condenses and reveals ourway of being human-that characteristic form we consider unique, unrepeatable, and irreducible to any one of its gestures. And yet, we are also (and perhaps only) the compendium of those gestures, that name, the things that we carry as a social sign, and that place in the topography of the world.
